Keeper of the work house 1737 but of very bad character.

In July 1739 Mr. Oglethorpe appointed him Provost Marshall and Jailer at Savannah with a Sallary of 20 pounds per annum.

Thomas Causton

Age 40, calico printer.

Embarked 6 Nov. 1732; arrived in the Georgia Colony 1 Feb. 1732-3. On the 1st ship load of Georgia colonists, The Charity.

Lot 24 in Savannah.

At first appointed 3rd Bailif, then 2nd. & lastly 1st. Bailif in 1734. He was also Publick Store Keeper on Hughs death 30 Sept. 1733, but turned out of both offices 1739 for abusing his Trust.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

From: Moravians in Georgia 1735-1740 by Adelaide L. Fries:

Mr. Causton was one of the three magistrates charged with all civil and criminal jurisdiction in Savannah, and his position as keeper of the Store, from which all provisions promised by the Trustees were dispensed, gave him such additional power that he was really the dictator of Savannah, ruling so absolutely that the people finally rebelled, and in 1738 secured his dismissal from office. On his return to England in 1739, he found great difficulty in trying to explain his accounts to the Trustees, was sent back to Georgia to procure some needed papers, died on the passage over, and was buried in the ocean. His treatment of the Moravians was characteristic, for he was courtesy itself to the new-comers who had money to spend, inconsiderate when hard times came, deaf to appeals for settlement of certain vexing questions, and harsh when their wills were opposed to his.

Martha Hopkey

Embarked 25 May 1733; arrived in the Georgia Colony 23 Sept. 1733; Dead 10 Oct. 1740

The record of Sophia Hopkey indicates that she is the niece of Martha Causton. From this we can surmize that Martha's maiden name was Hopkey.

The record for Tho. Marcer indicates he is the son of Martha Causton, thus we know Martha was married to Mr. Marcer before marrying Tho. Causton.

See note on mother.

Jacob Charles

Son of Charles. Born in Georgia.

The record does not indicate which "Charles" Jacon was born to so I have assumed his father to have the same first name. This could easily be incorrect, however.

Henry Clark

Son of Henry & Anne.

Born in Georgia 17 Sept. 1733.

Dead 9 Sept. 1733. (Obviously in error, thus I just listed the date of death as Sept. 1733. Since Elias was born in March 1733, this child would have only been about 6 months along in September so it was probably aborted and born dead.)

Elias Clark

Son of Henry & Anne.

Born in Georgia 13 Mar. 1732-3.

Dead 28 Oct. 1733.

Isaac King Clark

Judith Sykes

On the 1st ship load of Georgia colonists, The Charity.

Age 29; Re-marry'd to Tho. Cross 29 June 1734 and quitted the Colony with him. Quitted Dec. 1738

(The record for Fra. Sykes indicates she is the mother of Judith. I have made the assumption that Judith's maiden name is then Sykes though it is possible that it is not.)

The record for Thomas Cross indicates he married the widow Judith Clark. This Judith is the only choice for him to have married.
