Text of a brief biography of Elder J.H. Smith:

Elder J. H. Smith was born May 16th, 1839 in Monroe Cty.,Ga., and died February 22, 1910 making his stay on earth 70 years, 3months, 21 days.

He was born son of Joseph and Elizabeth Smith. He was married to Miss Sallie Durden of Twiggs Cty., Ga.. They lived together until his death. Their married life being 43 years, 3 months, 6 days.To this union was born 9 children, 5 boys and 4 girls, all who were present at the burial of their father. He had 41 grand-children and 1 great-grand-child.

He joined the Primative Baptist Church, Bethlehem, in the town of Macon, Ga. in the year of 1860 or 1861; was baptized by ElderJohn M. Fields of the same place. He was ordained to the full work of the ministry of Christ, May 1st, 1869 by the following named elders: J. W. Basset, James J. Davis, and G. W. Scarboro. He came to Bulloch Cty., Ga. in November 1884 and was received into the fellowship of the Lake Church by a letter of recommendation, together with his wife soon after. He was called to the care of the Ash Branch Church in June 1885, and was received into the fellowship of this church by a letter from the Lake Church, with his wife soon following. He remained a member of this church until his death. He was the faithful pastor of it for 25 years.

Few men possessed the christian traits of Elder J. H. Smith, firm in doctrine, kind and sociable, loving and considerate. It can be truthfully said of him that he served his bretheren from a source of devotional love, and from his labors many have been rept. Thus the saying is fullfilled, "one soweth and another reapeth." He was an elected moderator of the Lots Creek Primative Baptist Association on Friday before the 4th Sunday in October, 1905, and seved in that capacity until his death.

He was buried in Ash Branch Cemetery in the presence of a great number of sorrowing friends, relatives, and bretheren; Elder J. A. Bowen conducting the funeral service.

"Long last the memory of the truly great, for they are to our common state, Our present loss is their eternal gain; our hope of reward is what they have attained.

So let us submit to God's great power, And strive to serve him to the final hour, that we may enjoy for ever more What the Savior has for us in store."

Sarah "Sallie" A. Durden

A small built lady and a very good cook. It is said that she baked and cooked a lot of good things to take to Ash Branch Church when they had dinner on the ground.

One of grandma Purvis' fondest memories growing up was her grandmother baking a cake and letting her eat it while it was still warm. I can remember grandma Purvis baking a pound cake and we having a piece while it was warm. The cake also tasted so good that way - probably would have tasted as good cooled, but this was special to me eating the cake warm.

After the death of her husband, she signed the house and property over to her son, Jim. She continued living with her son and his family at the homeplace. After Jim's death, his wife was very cruel to her. When Bertie (dauhter-in-law) would leave the house, she would lock up the food so grandma Smith had nothing to eat. There were times that she would walk to where grandma Purvis (Iler Sherrod) lived to get her something to eat. It was told that she was so weak sometimes that she would fall down a couple of times when walking to get food. Her youngest daughter, Sally, took her to Savannah to live with her.

Died at daughter Sally's home at 1313 Barnard St., Savannah, Ga.

Written on tombstone: Death is the crown of life

His age is 20-30. The following other Butlers are also there. John (40-50), Jesse (40-50), and James (40-50). Notice, all are similar in age. All have names starting with 'J'. And all live relatively close together. I feel certain one of these is Jefferson's father and the other two are his father's brothers. There is also another John Butler near Jefferson's age. A brother perhaps?
