After his father died, he had his mother to sign over her homeplace to him. He, wife, and children moved into the house that belonged to his parents.
He and granddaddy Purvis (Kelly) went to Savannah and when they returned, Jim got sick and died that night. No one knew what he died from.

Lawrence "Lonzie" D. Sherrod
Died of stomach cancer.
Obituary from the Savannah Morning News:
Lawrence D. Sherrod, 54, of Rt. 1, Bloomingdale, died yesterday at his home after a long illness.
He was a member of the South Newington Baptist Church and was a veteran of World War II. He was a truck driver for Tamiami Trailways. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Gertrude Woods Sherrod of Bloomingdale; four sons, Jerry D. Sherrod of Port Wentworth, Donald Lee Sherrod and Michael J. Sherrod of Bloomingdale, and Lonnie P. Owens of Rincon; two daughters, Mrs. R. H. Jones and Miss Linda Gayle Sherrod, both of Bloomingdale; three brothers, A. D. Sherrod and J. H. Sherrod, both of Savannah, and Ben F. Sherrod of Ellabell; two sisters, Mrs. J. O. Harper of Savannah and Mrs. S. K. Purvis of Bloomingdale; six grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Irvine Henderson Funeral Home is in charge.
