George was alive on 9-1-1828 but apparently incapacitated by 1-4-1830 when Clem Powers took over his responsibility as guardian of Dr. Henry Shuman.

George may have been living in Liberty Cty., GA in 1800 as he filled for administration of his father's estate in both counties.

George drew land in the 1805 Land Lottery and his will is in Book L, Bryan Cty. Superior Ct., 1830. George owned land in several counties but apparently lived in Bryan County during his last few years. Wife, Faithy, is on the 1830 Census of Bryan Co, GA and was still living in Bryan Cty. in 1838. per Shuman Geneology.

From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek, A History of Bryan County, Georgia, by Buddy Sullivan, published by Bryan County Board of Commissioners, 2000 - reference pages 54, 385, 391 "It is known that George's father, Martin Shuman settled first in Beaufort, South Carolina in 1750 and later acquired land in Effingham County, Georgia. The Shuman family arrived in Bryan County, Georgia the first few years of 1800. George may have been born in either Beaufort, South Carolina or Effingham County, Georgia... According to From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek in 1805, George drew land in upper Bryan County in the Georgia Land Lottery of 1805." (page 54). This is confirmed in The Shuman Family Genealogy & Allied Familes, which states George drew land in the 1805 Land Lottery. From From Beautiful Zion to Red Bird Creek George H. Shuman had 3 slaves (page 391). On January 1, 1811 he paid $500 to purchase negro Amelia from Francis Courvoise.

On April 17, 1811 he was deeded 500 acres by his father, Martin Shuman of South Carolina. Witness: Sarah Bird, James Bird (page 385).

On January 22, 1813 he bought 194 acres of land from William Jackson for $50.

He served as a Commissioner of the Courthouse and Jail of Bryan County.

In 1819, he was the Sheriff of Bryan County.
Over the years, member of this family have become allied through marriage with members of the Butler, Clanton, Downs, Futch, Davis, Barber, Geiger, Lanier and Parrish Familes of Bryan County. According to The Shuman Family Genealogy & Allied Familes, George's will is recorded in Book L, Bryan County, Georgia in 1838. A request to Bryan County Courthouse on July 22, 2001 for a copy of this record. The reply from the court clerk was that they hold records only from the late 1800's and their records do not go back beyond that.

Faithy Bird or Waller

Another researcher indicates her last name might be "Bird". While still another (The Shumans of Brantley Co, GA; Little John Griffin) indicates it was probably "Waller".

The 1830 Census, Bryan Cty., Ga. shows Faithy (abt 55 yrs) living here with:
a male 15-20, - don't know who this would be
a male 20-30, - this must be James
3 @ male slaves betw. 16-24,
1 @ male slave betw 36-55,
4 @ female slaves betw 4-10,
2 @ female slaves betw 16-24,

Living near her are William (betw 20-30), John (betw 20-30), Samuel G.(betw 20-30), John M. (betw 30-40), Martin (betw 20-30), George H.(betw 20-30), & Martin, Sr (betw 60-70). Nancy is living in Hancock Cty. (betw 40-50).
_______________________________________________________________________________

T. W. Parker lists her death as 1842.
___________________________________________________________________________
It is presently UNPROVEN THAT BIRD WAS HER SURNAME. According to Carol Jarrard, this may not be true and could have been a story started by a man who has since deceased. He was noted for telling stories that had no documentation, and then writing them down as fact. Need some sort of documentation to prove this is correct. Some say her actual surname may have been Waller. Mrs. Faith Shuman had 18 slaves (reference page 391 of From Beautiful Zion..) Possibly daughter of Sylvanus Bird and Dinah Stafford Bird (?) based on her birth year. On April 17, 1811 George was deeded 500 acres by his father, Martin Shuman of South Carolina. Witness: Sarah Bird, James Bird. Sarah and James were some type of close relation to Faithy - sister/brother or mother/father? In the 1830 Census of Bryan County, Faithy is listed as head of household, indicating her husband George had already died before the census was taken (he died that very year in 1830).
It appears from the 1830 census that Sarah Bird lived next to Faithy, and was younger than Faithy. The census also indicated that Sarah's husband, James, had died by 1830. Sarah is listed in the census as Mrs. Sarah Bird. That would make it more likely Sarah was Faithy's sister-in-law. Carolyn Barber Jarrad's book notes Faithy was still living in Bryan county in 1838. A relation, Betty indicates she has a letter stating that her surname was Waller, not Bird and provides the following info: My 4th Great grandfather, George Henry Shuman married a woman named Faithy, I have a letter written a long time ago that says her name was Faith Waller. I've never heard the name of Faithy Bird. Faithy ? Shuman left a will deed dated 13 Apr 1837 in which the following were mentioned: Samuel G. Shuman Providence Louisa Shuman John M. Shuman George H. Shuman Elizabeth Shuman William Jeykel (my 3rd. Great grandfather) James Shuman George Henry, Sr. died in Bryan Co., Georgia 14 May 1830 Howard Shuman (whshuman@yahoo.com) adds: FAITHY was born Abt. 1775 in Ebenezer Church, Effingham County, Ga, and died 1842 in Bryan Co., GA. She married GEORGE HENRY SHUMAN Abt. 1794 in Georgia, son of MARTIN SHUMANN and TABITHA. He was born 1773 in South Carolina, and died Bef. 1830 in Bryan County, GA.

Martin Shuman

1830 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census:
Martin is living near mother Faithy. He is living with the following people:
a white female betw. 20-30 - this must be his wife, we do not know her name, yet
a white female under 5 ys. -

A Mary Lewis shows up on the 1870 census at age 45 and living with Ellen Shuman (18) and George (?)(1), and Annie Lewis (13).This would appear to be the same lady whom Martin married. From the census data it would appear that Ellen is the child of Martin Shuman and Annie and George are the children of William Riley Lewis. Annie's age would imply that Martin died before 1856 and George's age would imply that William died in 1869.

All of Martin's children are assigned to 'unknow' since we have no idea when she died and he married Mary.

Martin Henry Shuman

Description: signed his last will and testament. This document mentions children John, Martin, George Henry, James, Jonathon, and Elizabeth Womack. Will Bk. MR-B, pg. 124

The following is an extract of the Will of Martin Shuman of Effingham Cty., dated Oct. 4, 1793 and probated on Dec. 1, 1800 :

He devised all of his estate to his wife Tobitha for her life time or widowhood; and after her death or re-marriage he directed that his son John Shuman take charge of the estate and also take charge "of the young children until the youngest of them is 16". He gives to his sons John and Martin Shuman the cattle he has already given them; to his son, George Henry Shuman, the cattle he has already given him; to his daughter, Elizabeth Womack, certain cattle, and if she leaves no issue at her death, such cattle and their increase to return to his estate; to son, James Shuman, certain cattle when he is of age, and also the upper half of 400-acre tract on the Ogeechee River in Effingham Cty., and sons John and Martin Shuman to be trustees for said James during his minority, and if he dies without issue then the property bequeathed him to return to his estate. To son Jonathan Shuman certain cattle when he is 21, and the lower half of said 400-acre tract of land being the place where testator lives, sons John and Martin to be trustees for said Jonathan during his minority. In his will testator requests his son John to take care of and support his mother, & c. Says he has an estate in Germany by his father Henry Shuman there, and he directs that it be equally divided among his children. Executors: Sons John and Martin Shuman. Witnesses: William Ray, Ann Robertson, James Kirk.

Martin stated in his will that he was heir to an estate in Germany. He also had son Martin baptized into the Ebenezer Church in 1773. It would seem unlikely that one child would be so baptized and the others not, so most likely, all were baptized into the church though we have record of only Martin (& perhaps George & Elizabeth).

The records states:
Martin, 3 years old, son of Martin Schuman and his wife Tabitha, was baptized together with the 1o children aforementioned on May 1773. The parents were sponsors.
-----------------------------------------------------------
From Jordan - Woodard Family Tree:
Martin Henry Shumann received a land grant from King George III on June 23, 1774. The land was one hundred acres on a branch of the Savannah River named Black Swamp in Granville County, South Carolina. Later, Martin Henry Shumann served in the Revolutionary War, on the American side, as a horseman on foot. He lived in Beaufort Parish (now Hampton County) South Carolina prior to living in Georgia.

The History of Jasper County: Black Swamp Area:
Shortly after the English settled Carolina, during the times of the Lords Proprietors, the area which now encompasses Jasper County was designated as part of Granville County. This included the "Indian Lands" stretching from the Combahee River to the Savannah River. Legend has it that the first courthouse and jail in Granville County consisted of a log building near a causeway across the Black Swamp, a tributary of the Savannah River along the banks of which lived the Pallachuccola tribe. Remnants of an old fort named for the tribe can still be seen in the swamp today.
In the late 1700's, the area was known as the "back country" of the Beaufort District, which was organized under the Court Act of 1769. The seat of government was placed on the coast in Beaufort, but access was a major problem due to the numerous tidal streams and marshes between the "back country" and the coast. In 1788, Coosawhatchie, nine miles north of present Ridgeland, became the government seat. In 1840, the courthouse was moved to higher ground in Gillisonville, where it remained until it burned in 1865. In 1868, Beaufort once more became the government seat.
In 1878, Hampton County was created, cutting sections from the old Court Act districts of Beaufort and Barnwell. The area formerly comprising most of Granville County became separate counties of Hampton and Beaufort, from which Jasper County was created in 1912. It was named for the Revolutionary War Hero Sergeant William Jasper. Jasper County is one of South Carolina's youngest counties.

jkellam@amnetline.com writes: "I have been on the Georgia Salzburg Society site and have found no mention of the surname Shuman as being in the Ebenezer community or surrounding area." I am not an authority on the Shuman family, but "Georgia Salzburgers and Allied Families," published in 2003 states in Vol. 3, page 2818, "Martin Schumann and his family were settled in or near Ebenezer prior to 1770." Volume 3 of this 4 volume series, beginning on page 2818 and ending on page 2829, lists 299 descendants for 9 generations for Martin Schumann and wife Tobita/Tabitha ???. It also reports that Martin died in 1799 in Effingham County, GA; and that he was the son of Henry Schumann of Germany. Alfred Chassereau

Martin Shuman settled in Beaufort, South Carolina in 1750. Martin received a land grant in South Carolina from King George III (the third) on June 23, 1774. The grant read as follows: "June 23, 1774, South Carolina George the Third By the Grace of God, of Great Britian, France and Ireland, King, Defender of the Faith, and so forth, to all to who these presents shall come, greeting: Konw ye, that we of our special grace, certain knowledge and mere motion have given and granted, and by there presents, for us our heirs, and our successours, do give and grant unto Martin Shumann, his heirs and assigns, a plantation or tract of land containing one hundred acres on a branch of the Savannah River called Black Swamp in Saint Peter's Parish, Granville County bounding west on the said Martin Shumann" Despite his land grant from the King, records indicate that Martin fought for liberty in the Revolutionary War. An audited account of the Revolutionary War, No. 66 S 186 reads: "1 September 1785 Martin Shuman For 30 days foot from 15 Spet. to 15 Oct. and 170 days as horseman from 6 June to 1st Dec 1781,,,Accounting...Twenty seven pounds eleven shillings and five pence... He later acquired land in Effingham County, Georgia. The Shuman family arrived in Bryan County, Georgia the first few years of 1800. It was mentioned in his will that Martin's father left him in estate in Germany. Martin's wife, Tabitha, was administratix of his will. Application of the will was dated March 24, 1798.

Tabitha

This extrapolation is based on the probability thatTabitha was in her late teens or early twenties when she married aswere most young women of the time. Of course, she could have been asyoung as fourteen or as old as thirty but neither is likely.

John Shuman

John & Jonathon (his brother), died at about the sametime. Why?. John was 29 years old, so it would be likely that he was married and had children.

According to The Shuman Family Genealogy & Allied Familes, John served in the Georgia Militia in 1794. It is uncertain if he is married but he did have an estate of which his father, Martin, was administrator. This document is dated 4/17/1797.

Jonathan Shuman

John & Jonathon (his brother), died at about the same time.Why?. Jonathon was only 16 so, probably, was still single.

Bascomb (spelt Bacon on the census) is staying with thefamily of Malekiah Parrish whose daughter Ann Jane will becomeBascomb's wife around 1883.

Bascom W.(50) and Janie(52) have now been married fortwenty six years. They have had eight children but only six survive. With them now are Gordon(22), Jesse(16), Leray(14), and Ro-y(12). Theyare living next to son Ben(24) and his wife, Pearl, who live next toBascom's brother, Brooks and his family.

Bascom W.(60) and Janie P.(61) now have only Robert P.(19)at home.

Bascomb and Jannie had 8 children according to the 1900census of whom 6 were still living at the time of the census. Those 6are shown living with them at that time, so the two who died must havebeen born before June 1900. There is a gap in the birth dates from1887 to 1892. Most likely they were born during this time and diedsoon after.
