Antonette "Nettie" Sherrod

Obituary for Antonette "Nettie" Sherrod: With the death of Mrs. J.T. Champneys late Friday afternoon, Columbus lost one of its most distinguished and devout Southern Ladies. Her death was not immediately expected, although she had been confined to bed or to a wheel chair in hospitals and in her home for six years. She died at her home. Services will be held at 3 p.m. today at the family residence, 519 South Third Avenue. Dr. W.L. Robinson, pastor of First Methodist Church will officiate. Davis Patty will sing. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery, with Gunter Funeral Home in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Champneys was before her marriage Miss Nettie Sherrod. She was the daughter of Charles Fox Sherrod and Susan Billups Sherrod, and the maternal granddaughter of Colonel and Mrs. T.C. Billups. On both sides, she was the descendant of lines noted for their culture, leadership and courage. As her pioneer ancestors played important roles in the early history of Mississippi and Alabama, so her own generation did in the later development of Columbus. They were leaders in social, financial and church circles. Mrs. Champneys' major interest centered about her family and her church. She was a life-long member of First Methodist Church and one of its oldest members. She was an officer of the old Ladies Aid Society, and later affiliated with the Woman's Society of Christian Service. For many years, she taught a Sunday School class at First Methodist Church and sang in its choir. She was at one time a member of the Shuk-ho-ta Tom-a-ha Chapter, D.A.R., of which her sister, Mrs. Sarah Sheffield, was founder. Of a family of 11 children, she was the last to be summoned by death. She had outlived her hustand and daughter by many years. Her closest survivor is her nephew, Henry Pope Sherrod of Columbus, formerly of Meridian. She also leaves a number of great-nieces and great-nephews, and a large and prominent family connection. Active pallbearers will be Edward Chapman, Ernest Locke, Dr. D.D. Griffin, Rufus Ward, Campbell Banks, Walter Swoope. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. G.S. Barnes, Willis Pope Sr., T.A. McGahey Sr., W.G. Evans, Rupert Richards, and J.W. Carr.
