Thomas Carter )in 1816 in TN had Children ( too many to name here) and moved to Washington County AR in 1835 where my G Grandfather Wesley Arthur Sherrod was born in 1836. He married Amanda Cannon in 1861. My grandfather was William Thomas Sherrod borb in Fayetteville AR in march 1880. I have information on this line from 1652 in Virginia (the Carter's) and this line descends from the Skipwith's, Dymokes and King Edward I of England. also includes Alfred the Great and Charlemagne.... If you have roots to the Sherrod's in Arkansas, I can probably help.

Arthur Sherrod

The post below indicates the possibility that Joel is not Arthur's father.

Margaret:

Arthur Sherrod and Susan Ewing were my ggg grandparents. Information I have found over the internet shows Arthur's father as another Arthur (b 1760 in NC, m 1785 in NC to Susan ?) Your genealogy lists his father as Joel. May I ask the particulars on your source of information? Also, do you have any information on Susan Ewing?

Thanks, Ernie Luther

I just recently found out that Salathiel Sherrod 1780-1846 is my ggg-grandfather he had a son named Richard ? Sherrod who married Hanna Hiens
I'm sure he had other children I would like to know the names of his other children and more information and Salathiel Sherrod's wife?
I have some information that Richard's son Turner James Sherrod - Miss. married Lucinda Elizabeth Haywood - DeSoto, Ms moved to Phillips Co, AR and had (4) sons Robert, John, William, & my grandfather James Turner Sherrod in Phillips County, Arkansas I know a little about William but have no information on Robert nor John Sherrod in Arkansas these are my great uncle's. I no William's grand-daughter and have even talked to her in Arkansas and she knows vary little also.

I am interested in Salathiel SHERROD for two reasons. (1) He's the grandfather of Turner James SHERROD, who married Lucinda Elizabeth HAYWOOD, a daughter of Tillman HAYWOOD in DeSoto Co., MS. Turner and Lucinda (HAYWOOD) SHERROD removed to Phillips Co., AR. By 1880, Lucinda appears to have remarried a PALMER (per father's will) and her children are living with her siblings in White Co., AR. Seek descendants of these SHERROD children and whereabouts of Lucinda in 1880. (2) Salathiel appears to have strong ties to Martin Co., NC STATONs due to his daughter Betsy marrying a Harvey STATON and due to his LLEWELLYN ancestry, a family that also intermarried with the STATONs. This leads me to believe that Salathiel travelled to TN with other Martin Co., NC families (possibly including STATON and LEGGETT). When did he come to TN?? Who were the other families that came?? I also am wondering if the Thomas STATON found in 1830 census of Gibson Co., TN is none other than Thomas STATON, son of Jesse and Sarah (JACKSON) STATON of Martin Co., NC up through 1810. Disappears after about 1816. Were the STATONs found on the 1830 census of Gibson Co., TN all children of this Thomas?

James E. Sherrod

James E. Sherrod born in 1870 and died in 1939 in Texarkana, Arkansas. His children were Irl, Chester, Mary Lou, Grace and Edna. He was married to Jodie Ledbetter. This James was a brother to my grandfather David Ethridge Sherrod. Another James Sherrod shows up as a child of Thomas and Purtandy Walden Sherrod. This James was a brother to my gggfather Felix.

Simon Sherrod

SIMON SHERROD was probably a part of the Sherrod family from Pennsylvania, and of German descent. Other Sherrods lived in Knox Co., Tenn. who are known to be part of a Pennsylvania German family. The marriage bond of Simon Sherrad and Catherine Hance was dated 10 March 1795, Indiana Botetourt Co., Va. John Peck, Sr. signed as security, and Grace (x) Thompson, mother of Catherine, gave consent. Simon signed as "Simon Sherritt". Of some significance is a deed dated 9 March 1785 when John Thompson of Campbell Co., Va. sold, for 200 lbs. currency, 379 acres purchased of Stephen Trigg, to John Peck of Botetourt Co. The deed made reference to John Thompson, Jr. of Bedford Co. [Botetourt Co. Deed Book 3, p. 328] In 1800 Simon was taxed in Botetourt Co., Va., along with a Thomas Sharrod. Simon was a landowner in Botetourt County by 12 June 1810, when he bought, for 80 lbs., 3 lots in the town of Amsterdam on Roanoke St., from Christian Lamon and Esten his wife. [Book 10, page 59] On 7 Mar 1814 he purchased from Lawson Dunnington and Anne his wife, 29 acres on Masons creek, a branch of Roanoke, part of 59 acres bought of Christian Hontz, next to Pierce Daniel and on a road to Simpsons line to Carltons. [Book 13, p. 132] Simon Sherrod, with wife Catherine, of the town of Salem, Botetourt County, sold out in 1816 and 1817 just before moving to Tenn. [Book 13, pages 132, 256] From 1811 to 1817 he was taxed on 3 lots in the town of Amsterdam, and from 1815 to 1818 on 29 acres near Salem. Amsterdam is in Botetourt County, but Salem is now in the county of Roanoke, which was formed in 1838. Simon Sherrod took his family from Va. to Knox Co., Tenn. and bought 100 acres of land there from Abraham Weir in 1817. He paid $650 for land on the Willow Fork of Beaver Creek, next to Sally Nelson and Robert Freiker. Witnesses to the deed were John Bayless, Isaac Bayless, and James Sherrod. [Knox Co., Tenn. Deed Book Q-1, p. 342] He sold this land to James Brown in 1826. Witnesses were John Carmichal, Christian Fraker, and John G. Riley. [Knox Co., Tenn. Deed Book U-1, p. 253] In 1828 Simon bought 300 acres from James Harbison for $400. This deed was witnessed by John G. Riley, George W. Sherrod, and Jas. Ledgerwood. [Knox Co., Tenn. Deed Book Z-1, p. 575] This George W. Sherrod was probably related as he was also bondsman to the marriage of David McHaffie and Catherine Sherrod, in 1832. We find Simon listed in the 1830 Census of Knox County., Tenn., aged 60-70. Next in the Census list is son-in-law, John Riley, and next is another son-in-law, Thomas Gattney. Also nearby is one Abraham Hankins, no doubt the father of the Abraham Hankins who married Ann P. Sherrod. In 1831 Simon bought another 93 acres from James P. Findley, located on the headwaters of Willow Fork of Beaver Dam Creek, next [---] Bayless and James Brown. [Knox Co., Tenn. Deed Book Z-1, p. 406] Other land transactions occurred, which will not be mentioned here. Simon Sherrod lived in that part of Knox County which, Indiana 1856, was divided off and became Union County. He named all the children in his will, 2 Feb 1841. To his wife Catherine he left possession of the house and plantation. At her death the land was to go to daughter Elizabeth Riley, who was named as executrix. The will was witnessed by Philip D. Bell and James Brown, and was proved in court in Apr 1841. [Recorded Will Book, Knox Co. Tenn.] It is possible that William Sherrod, mentioned in the will of Simon, was the same as George W. (George William?) Sherrod.

Andrew McHaffie

Individual: Andrew McHaffie, b. PA cir. 1770s or 1780, d. 1847/1848 Knox Co., TN, will made 1847, probated Feb 1848. Much information was shared by descendants in MO and the 1880 MO census listing Andrew's descendants states that Andrew's birthplace was PA. I have found an Andrew Mahaffey, b. between 1769-1771, who lived with John Mahafey/McHaffie of Botetourt Co. VA 1787, and John was perhaps Andrew's elder brother. Andrew "Mahaffey" appears as age 16-21 years (in home of John Mahafey, taxpayer) on The 1787 Census of Virginia, Botetourt Co., by Schreiner-Yantis. Andrew McHaffie was a witness at marriage of John McHaffie and Jannet/Jenny Campbell in Oct 1789, Botetourt Co. VA, per Botetourt County Marriages 1770-1853 by Vogt and Kethley, and name appears "Andrew Haffy" with John's name shown McHaffey. An officer of the court is also listed as a witness, the third witness, and perhaps Andrew was still underage. The marriage of John McHaffey and Jenny Campbell, 27 Oct 1789, was performed by Rev. Edward Crawford (Presbyterian, educated at Princeton University, NJ). Another witness was John Brush, the bondsman was Samuel Kennerly, and the third witness was Benjamin Rowe (deputy clerk, lawyer), consent - Robert Campbell, father - 20 Oct 1789. The marriage ceremony was performed at or near Fincastle, VA, since Rev. Edward Crawford was pastor of the Sinking Spring and Spreading Spring Presbyterian Congregations there until 1792 when he and 50 families moved to the Holston River area and est. Rock Spring Presbyterian. Perhaps the fact that there was a bondsman seemingly not of this family may indicate that John and Andrew's father lived in another area, was dead, or was away. Andrew McHaffie m. Catherine Harless b. cir. 1781 VA d. cir. 1854 Knox Co. TN, dau of David Harless on 22 Jun 1803, Montgomery Co. VA, per Mary Kegley's Early Adventurers on the Western Waters, vol.II. He appears in Elizabeth Petty Bentley's book Index to the 1810 Census of Virginia as Andrew McHaffy, 628, Montgomery (a large county at that time, bounded by Ohio River on the north). Andrew and Catherine moved to Knox Co TN in cir. 1811. Andrew filed a deed on 17 Nov 1815, purchasing 139 acres in TN from Jesse Galloway. Researcher F. B. McFee, Jr., wrote, stating that he found Andrew McHaffie is the signature on deed. Andrew McHaffie purchased 25 acres at Clear Fork of Flat Creek in 1828 from Jacob Miltonbarger (date 6-7-1828; date filed 3-10-1828) -- signed Andrew McHaffie. Andrew McHaffie appears on 1830 TN Census, Knox Co 373, no twp., and Andrew McHaffer is on 1830 TN Census, Knox Co 348, no twp. listed. A True Copy will be found in Bell's Book of Wills of Knox Co., TN. Andrew's will is on microfilm 1036714, item 2, US/CAN Film Area, filmed by the Genealogical Society of Utah, 1978, (made from a typescript by Alice L. Dickey, Sun City-Youngstown, AZ, donated by Mrs. George W. Hallgren, Potomac, MD). Andrew's will was filed in Knox Co., TN, in 1848. The 1850 TN Census shows his widow, Catherine, living with the son, Calvin. Catherine's parents were David Harless and wife Catharine Elizabeth ---. David was son of Johan Philip Harless (b. Germany 1716 d. Augusta Co. VA 1772 and wife Anna Margaretha Price (Preisch). Anna Margaretha was baptized Offenbach, Germany, 21 Sep 1713, d. 1784 Christiansburg, Montgomery Co. VA). There is much available about the Harless, Price families. One source shows Andrew George McHaffie. Many of us think Andrew is the brother of Jane McHaffie who m. 1803 in Montgomery Co. VA to John Ballenger, and also of John McHaffie who by 1804 is found in Knox Co. TN on Flat Creek of Holston River. I believe they are the children of James McHaffey who was in 1774 Dunmore's War, on payroll at Romney, joined Revolution in May 1775, Lancaster Co., PA, under Capt. Ross, served to end of Revolution, in Oct 1789 in PA received his pension, and moved to Montgomery Co. (cut from Botetourt Co. VA) where he lived probably as late as 1820. Compare also John McHaffie d. 1828 Knox Co., TN, Jannet Campbell, John MacHafee, runaway 'Irish servant,' 1738, master Lancelot Martin, Bucks Co. PA, per PA Gazette. Also note Pvt. John McHaffy in 1741 in Gooch's American Regiment on HMS York in War of Jenkins' Ear, in M. J. Clark's Colonial Soldiers. Pvt. Martin McHaffy was in same source, in Maryland militia, 1730s. "J. McH." and Martin McHaffey are named in Register of Marriages and Baptisms Performed by Rev. John Cuthbertson, Covenanter Minister, 1751-1791, as living in York Co., PA, in 1753 and 1754, and were visited by the pastor. The book was recently reprinted by Genealogical Publ. Co., Baltimore, and has some Braden/Broeden families among the Covenanter Presbyterian congregation. John Machiver is in 1688 Burlington Town, NJ, court records, testifying for Joseph Knight about non-payment for "their barrels." Burlington is just across the river from Bucks Co., PA. See also John McHaffie in Gargerie, Kirkcowan parish, Wigtownshire, Scotland (Galloway district) who was banished to American plantations for life on 17 Oct 1684 at Wigtown Jail because of his refusal to acknowledge King Charles II as head of the presbyterian church. Following is true copy of document hand copied by Myron H. Thomas (whose wife Mary Virginia is of Indiana McHaffies) at Virginia State Library in Richmond, VA, from microfilm reed 39, 1796-1803 Virginia State Libraries (copies can be obtained only through Christiansburg, Montgomery Co. VA): Know All Men by these Presents that we Andrew McHaffie & David Harless are held and firmly bound unto in the sum of One Hundred & Fifty Dollars current Money, to the payment whereof we bind ourselves, our heirs and unto the Governor and his __? ____? jointly by these presents witnesth our hand or seals this 22nd of June 1803. The condition of the above obligation is such that whereas the above bond (bound) Andrew McHaffie hath this day obtained a license for his marriage with Catharine Harliss. If therefore there shall be no legal course to obstruct said marriage then the above obigation to be voice. (Signed) Andrew McHaffie (written plainly) David Harland?? (not too legible) All above longhand. Mr. Thomas also copied the marriage to Jane McHaffie(ee). He stated that those at Virginia Historical Society at Richmond were very helpful. I think Mr. Jack McClintic assisted. For many reasons, I believe that Andrew McHaffie of Montgomery Co., VA, who d. 1848 Knox Co., TN, is the brother of my great-great-great grandfather, John McHaffie who d. Aug 1828 Knox Co., TN. Both men left wills, available on microfilm, and are found in land records there always signing their surname clearly McHaffie. Early deeds are reportedly misfiled under "McA-" however.
Andrew McHaffie witness at marriage of JohnMcHaffie 27Oct 1789 &JenneyCampbell Fincastle, VA then in Botet. Co.
