The Georgians by J.H. Austin lists James as the first born in 1782 which is 20 years before the Shuman Family shows his birth. And Jordan -Woodard places his birth at Orangeburg, SC not in Georgia,

Elias Shuman

In the 1830 Census of Bryan Cty., Ga., Elias is living with hisfather and mother and brothers Elijah and Wm. Henry and sister Eliza.Brother Martin lives with wife and baby daughter a couple of housesaway.

Temple Smith

Since she was married in 1834, it seems unlikely she wasless than 14, thus the choice of this year as an approximation.

On the 1820 census of Bryan Cty., GA are Joshua Smith,Solomaon Smith, and David Smith. One of these must be Temple's father.

Elias Calvin Shuman

In the 1850 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census, Elias is staying with step-mother, Pharabee, on her farm to help out as she is very old and frail.

Elias was in the Civil War. He was in Co. B, 61st Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry, Army of Northern Va., Tattnall Rangers. He was in the Civil War having inlisted on 8-31-1861 and died in 1862 in Virginia.

1850 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census:

36 196 196 Shuman Geo. H. 62 M W Planter 1,000 Ga
37 196 196 Shuman Sarah Ann 30 F W Ga
38 196 196 Shuman Martha J. 19 F W Ga
39 196 196 Shuman Henry H. 15 M W Ga
40 196 196 Shuman Henry F. 11 M W Ga X

42 196 196 Shuman Elvy Ann 6 F W Ga
1 196 196 Shuman William 17 M W Ploughman Ga
2 196 196 Shuman James E. 7 M W Ga
3 196 196 Shuman Kelsey Ann M. 6/12 F W Ga

George is listed as 62 here but that is not in keeping with the two previous census records and appears to an error. Similarly, Sarah Ann is listed as 30 which would mean she gave birth to Martha when she was 11 which is highly unlikely. The numbers are probably meant to be 42 and 40 respectively.

Carolyn Barbar Jarrad's book notes that he was living in Meldrim, Effingham Co, GA when he died, where his will is probated.

The 1830 Census of Bryan Cty. Ga. shows George living with a white female betw. 15-20. This must be Sarah.

This could be Susan Shuman (# 314)

Adeline is on the 1870 Bryan Cty. census with Andrew Jackson Englishand his wife Susan Gibson. But the Southern Marriage record show SusanSHUMUN married A.J. English. I think this shows that Susan Gibsonmarried a Shuman by whom she had Adeline. That fellow died and Susanthen married Andrew by whom she had several other children.
