Evelyn Virginia Haines
Individual:[Morgans, Wm andSons.FBK.FBK.FTW]Information from the newspaper article about her wedding to Eugene Sherrod, Jr., Jun. 1947:Mrs. Sherrod attended the University of Wisconsin, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in art. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority, and for the past year has been State Recommendation chairman for that organization. A past president of the Jacksonville Alliance of Delta Delta Delta, she served as treasurer during the past year. She also held the office of historian of the Jacksonville Panhellenic Association of which she was an active member.----------------------------Evelyn Haines was a very attractive young lady. A number of people said she resembled a young Queen Elizabeth II. However, she did not marry until she met Eugene Sherrod Jr. when she was 38 years old. He was an officer on a Coast Guard vessel that docked at Jacksonville, FL at the end of the war.Evelyn and Eugene were married in St. John's Cathedral shortly after they married and they moved to Wichita Falls, TX where Eugene began a law practice.Their marriage was an unhappy one and they separated less than a year after the marriage. Evelyn was pregnant at the time with Phillip Haines Sherrod and she returned to live with her parents in Jacksonville, FL which is where Phillip was born. They were divorced shortly later.Although Evelyn was a talented artist and had received a degree in commercial art from the University of Wisconsin, she ended up working as a secretary and remained living with her parents. In 1956 Evelyn began to experience coordination problems and difficulty speaking. The illness progressed slowly and was not diagnosed for a year or two. Finally the disease was recognized as Alateral Multiple Sclerosis. Over the course of the next few years she progressively lost muscular control until she reached the point where she was bedridden and required nearly continuous attention. Her father, K. S. Haines, retired from his work to help care for her. Fortunately, the disease left her with breathing control so she never required a respirator. She also was able to continue reading, although someone had to turn the pages for her.Evelyn lived with her parents who cared for her while they were alive. After their deaths she resided at Cathedral Health Center which provided nursing care. Evelyn had been active in Tri-Delta sorority and when they heard of her condition they contributed a small amount each month to the Center to help cover the expenses of her care.In 1975 she experienced an obstructed bowel which required emergency surgery. The surgery was successful, but a week or so later a blood clot broke loose and caused a fatal heart attack.[Morgans, Wm andSons.FBK.FTW]Information from the newspaper article about her wedding to Eugene Sherrod, Jr., Jun. 1947:Mrs. Sherrod attended the University of Wisconsin, where she graduated with a bachelor of science degree in art.
