Cealy (Sealy) Anna Futch
Shuman Family Geneology by Earline Geiger, Carolyn Jarrard, EunaMae Futch & Aileen Knaebel indicates that Cealy died about 1839. However, she is clearly listed on the 1850 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census. I have attributed the children listed as born before 1850 to Cealy Ann. However, some of those attributed to Letitia, James' second wife may, in fact, be Cealy Ann's as I do not yet know just when she died.

Sparkman Date: June 02, 2000 at 11:17:53 In Reply to: Bryan Co GA, James & Letitia Shuman by Julie Naert of 338 James Shuman and Letitia Ann Harvey are my great-great grandparents and Raphene Shuman and Samuel B. Kelley are my great grandparents.James Shuman was born January 12, 1809 in Bryan County, Georgia and died September 17, 1877 in Hillsborough County, Florida. He married (1) Cealy Anna Futch in 1827. He married (2) Letitia Ann Harvey (called Lethy) abt 1840 in Georgia. She was born August 12, 1821 in Bryan County,Georgia and died November 24, 1897 in Hillsborough County, Florida.Children by Anna Futch: William Ferdinand m Barbara Gibson, Sarah Barbara m (1) William Lightsey (2) William Henry VanBrackel, Providence Kaithy m Zara Harvey, and James Henry m Lizzie Sikes.Children by Lethy: Georgian Elizabeth m (1)Nathan Brown (2) Doc Proctor, Richard Harmon m Georgia Rebecca VanBrackle (only child to stay in Georgia), Jane Isabelle m James Kicklighter, George Martin m Julia Ann Altman, Alfred Franklan m Sarah Gertrude Alderman, Cornelia F. m Ephran Hill, Ralphene m Samuel B. Kelley, Ellen Vertile m Henry P. Bailey, Mary Martha m Charles Fortner, and Irene A. m Bill Alderman.James and Lethy are buried at Bethlehem Cemetery in Hillsborough County, Florida. I, and several of my cousins replaced damaged tombstones. There is a Gathering at this cemetery twice a year. Ft. Lonesome is too far from where they lived.Yes, there is a story about Irene being lost in the swamp when James and his family were traveling to Florida in 1867.I don't believe James plantation was burned because he was a Mason and the Yankee lieutenant was a Mason who came to James home. He sold it to a Jeremiah Grimes, carpetbagger for a great amount of money (in those days). There is also a family story concerning this.James Shuman's parents were Faithy Bird and George Henry Shuman. I have never found a daughter named Faithy.I hope this information will help you with your research. From JulieHenrie,Thanks for all of your great information! I had heard that Harvey's were related. This is actually my husband's family but I have been at it for about 20 years. Mary (Molly) Shuman, who married Charles Fortner was his g-grandmother. Her name actually was Mary Fomelia Shuman. We heard through her daughter, Gladys, of the story of Irene getting lost in the swamp. Can you relate your version to me?Also, there have been some stories of the pillage of the plantation and I wondered which were the truth. Some have James making a Masonic sign when he was about to be shot and then saved by the officer. Another has the silver being buried and one of the Negro girls told where it was. I did hear that they burned the house. Do you have an official version? On the 1850 census I found a Faithy P. living in the household. Did any of their sons fight in the War?Gladys did mention all of the siblings beginning with Belle. I have only heard of Ralphene being referred to as "Feen". Sorry for the spelling. Which child were you descended from?Another story was that Charles Fortner was dating one of Mollie's older sisters (don't know which one) when Molly was just a girl and he supposedly told her that he was waiting for her to grow up so he could marry her. She was very young when married but they had 12 children. Charles died in about 1911 or 1913 of a fever.I do have lots of census records and have been to the libraries in Orlando and Bartow. I also went to Plant City Gen Library and that is where I got the info on the Bethlehem Cemetery at Ft. Lonesome. It was in a book with some of the tombstone inscriptions. What can you tell me about James and Lethy Ann? Oh, I also heard that James had some brothers nearby too. Do you know of them?Enough questions for now. Can you tell that you are the first contact I have had with someone of this family?....Regards,Julie Naert, Des Moines, Iowajulenaert@aol.com
