Martin was born in Effingham Co, GA or perhaps South Carolina but may have moved to Liberty Co when he left his parents home as he owned property there in 1794. By 1810 he was in Bryan Co, GA and stayed there the rest of his life.

According to The Shuman Family Genealogy & Allied Familes, Martin married (1) Martha born circa 1770-1775. She died between 1830-1840 in South Carolina. He then married (2) Pharabee Sauls on December 12, 1840. He was a property owner in the Beaufort District of South Carolina on the 1800 census. He was married and already had a family. He also had a family in Georgia. He was not able to marry the mother of his children in Georgia until his first wife in South Carolina died. She was still living on the 1830 census, but by 1840 she had died. Martin then married Pharabee. The surname for these children was Sauls. In 1827 and 1829 he had them changed by legislature to Shuman. Pharabee was still living in the 1870 census.

Pharabee lives on a large farm valued at $2600 and has a substantial worth of $6356. With her at this time are Elias Shuman (18)and William D. Gray (11), son of step daughter Eliza who died just after he was born. She lives only two houses away from step son, William Henry. Elias is Elias Calvin, her step-grandson, IRN 426. He apparently is helping out on her farm now as she is very old. In August of 1861, he will inlist in the Civil War and die in hospital in 1862.

Meridith
Meridith is living with three slaves at this time and nearby is Pharabee living by herself.
Meridith Sauls(60-70) is on the 1830 census of Bryan Cty.,GA. Her age is right to be the mother of Pharabee and there are noother Sauls around so she must be the one. It is possible she couldalso be Pharabee's sister. The age disparity is not very great.

1 @ Male 25-44; Wiley
1 @ Male 45+; William
1 @ Female 45+; Elizabeth (Shuman)

William Gaddy was appointed guardiam of William's minor heirs.
On 3-28-1803, in Montgomery Cty., Ga., William sold a peice of property to Simon Hadley as noted on page 236 of the Montgomery Cty. Book of deeds.
Elizabeth Shuman
Ebenezer Church Records, Effingham Co, GA:
George Henry, four years, and Elisabeth two years and three Months old Children of Martin Shiedman, being baptiz. on the 12th of Novbr. 1777. (I think this is actually Shuman not Shiedman)____________________________________________________________________
Husband, William's, will makes no mention of Elizabeth so she must have been dead by then.
On 4-10-1807, James and Mary Shuman applied for administrators of the estate of William Shuman. It would be unlikely that anyone but close relatives would do this. James was William's brother. Mary is not shown, only Elizabeth. I suspect, Elizabeth's name was actually 'Mary Elizabeth' but she went by Elizabeth most of the time.

The Shuman geneology by Corolyn Jarrard gives Jame's death as abt 1828. However George H. was appointed executer of his estate on 9-3-1827 in Effingham Cty. which would emply that James died before then. According to a deed in Book A of the Houston Cty., Ga. Book of Deeds, George Henry Shuman and Clem Powers divided a plot of land on 8-29-1822 and George was administrator of James's estate at that time. So James must have died before Aug. 1822.
ESTATE INVENTORY PROCEEDINGS: Annuls of Georgia Geneology Mag.
The estate was valued at $3522.6875 at that time.
Martha Key
Martha does not appear on the 1820 Effingham Co, GA Federal Census with James. According to The Shuman Family Genealogy & Allied Familes, she was born in North Carolina not in Georgia as LDS records indicate. Her husband's will indicates she was "an idiot or insane person, and therefore incapable of supporting herself". James died not long after this census so perhaps Martha is staying with other reatives at this time.
James Shuman
According to Sherry Boresen Sullivan: His maternal uncle, George H. Shuman, became his guardian after his father's death, as his mother was "insane" and could not care for him.

William Jr. as an adult went to Thomas County, GA in the early 1830's, bringing with him his first born son John Rutherford Shuman b 1829 Bryan Co. William died in Jefferson Co, FL in late 1870's. Her Shuman line continues on through John Rutherford's son William Thomas Shuman to Julius Bartow Shuman.
Mary Ann "Polly" Bridges
Mary Ann is not mentioned in the Will of her husband's father, nor are the children.
Drucilla Johnson
Drucilla does not appear on the 1820 Bryan Co, GA Federal Census (or the Bullock or Effingham Co, either) which leads me to think she was with relatives at that time. It is also possible she was with Moses Johnson. There is a woman and two children under 10 with Moses that could be them.
In the 1820 census of Bryan Cty., GA only William Johnson (45 or older) could be Drucilla's father.
