Note:
SKINNER-JAMESBrilliant Afternoon Wedding-First in New Methodist ChurchSince the announcement a few months ago of their engagement, Greenville has eagerly looked forward to the marriage of Mr. Charles C. Skinner and Miss Nina C. James, than whom is not among us a more popular couple. The eventful day has come and with it every auspicious surrounding to make a happy union of hearts. All that was anticipated was fully realized, for it was indeed a most beautiful marriage. It was the first marriage to take place in the new Jarvis Memorial Methodist church, and this also added interest to the occasion. Nothing that devoted friends could think of and plan to lend beauty to the scene was omitted. The windows of the church were screened and the electric lights made the interior brilliant. The entire chancel and altar were decorated in green and white, the alcove behind the pulpit being a pyramid of palms and ferns. Sometime before the appointed hour for the ceremony, 2 o’clock, friends of the couple were arriving at the church in large number, and the edifice was soon filled. As the bridal party entered the church and passed up the aisles to their repective positions about the altar, the choir sang Lohengrin’s “Bridal Chorus”. Mr. Sam Parris, of Norfolk, presiding at the organ.First came the ushers in couples up opposite aisles, Messrs. Charlie James and Harry Skinner, Jr., J. B. James and Frank Skinner, T. J. Moore and T. G. Skinner, Jr., W. E. Hooker and N. G. White. Each of the gentlemen wore Prince Albert coat, gray trousers with gloves and tie to match, with silk hat in hand.Following these came the bride’s maids singly up opposite aisles, crossing in front and passing behind the altar rail. These were Misses Kathleen Ballard [Franklinton], Nell Nelson [Halifax], Charlotte Fennell [Wilmington], Nell Skinner, Irma Cobb, Margaret Skinner, Lottie Blow and Mary Higgs. Each of these was attired in white net dresses and carried pink carnations tied with white tulle.Next came the dame of honor, Mrs. H. A. White and maid of honor, Miss Mary James, up opposite aisles. The dame of honor’s costume was of white crepe de chine and the maid on honor’s pink liberty silk, the former carrying white carnations and the latter pink carnationsImmediately preceding the bride was little Miss Ada James, as flower girl, in white chiffon with lace trimming and carrying pink carnations. The bride entered with her father, Col. F. G. James. She was robed in full bridal costume of White Duchess satin en train, trimmed with panne velvet, Duchess lace and pearls, and carried a shower bouquet of lilies of the valley. She was met at the altar by the groom who came through the pastor’s study with his brother, Dr. L. C. Skinner, of Ayden, as best man.The ceremony was impressively performed by Rev. M. T. Plyler, soft melody coming from the organ as the marriage vows of the couple were taken. To the strains of Mendelsohn’s Wedding March the bride and groom passed out the aisle followed by the attendants.Immediately after the ceremony a reception was held at the home of Col. And Mrs. F. G. James. The callers were received in the hall by ex-Gov. and Mrs. T. J. Jarvis and Mr. And Mrs. H. A. White. At the parlor door they were received by Dr. L. C. Skinner with Miss Mary James.Receiving with the bride and groom in the parlor were Mr. And Mrs. James, parents of the bride, and Mr. And Mrs. Charles Skinner, parents of the groom. Mrs. James was gowned in white Marquisette over taffeta trimmed with satin and lace, and carried a bouquet of Parma violets tied with white tulle. Mrs. Skinner was gowned in grey silk with lace trimmings, and carried white carnations. The receiving party in the library were Mr. And Mrs. H. L. Fennel, Mr. And Mrs. C. ___.Carr and Mrs. James Burton Cherry.Frappe was served in the hall by Mrs. E. B. Ficklen and Miss Ada Wooten. The decorations throughout the residence were beautiful as well as elaborate. The hall was in red and green with ropes of smilax and a profusion of American beauty roses, the parlor in sweet peas, the library with potted plants. In the dining room the guests were served by Mesdames J. L. Little, J. L. Wooten, C. O’H. Laughinghouse, R. J. Cobb, J. G. Moye, W. A. Bowen and F. G. Whaley. The decorations were white and green. The table was festooned with smilax, bride roses and marriage bells. The centre piece was a block of ice on a silver waiter wreathed in smilax, a cluster of bride roses thrown over it with Cupid rising out of the roses. A two course menu was served, the ices being in bride roses. The decorations throughout the residence were beautiful as well as elaborate. The hall was in red and green with ropes of smilax and a profusion of American beauty roses, the parlor in sweet peas, the library with potted plants. The wedding presents were displayed in the library. These were very numerous and exceedingly handsome. Among them was one from the church in recognition of the bride’s faithful service as organist, and one from the San Souci club of which she was a member.Croccia’s Italian band was stationed in the upper hall and rendered delightful music during the reception. The couple departed on the 4:24 train for an extended bridal tour, after which they will be at home in Vondel flats, New York City. The bride’s going away gown was a tailor suit of black and white with Persian trimming and hat to matchThe hearty good wishes of all go with the happy couple.
