John (Jean) Barner (Bernard)

Notes for John Barner: JOHN BARNER lived in Powhatan Co., VA during the mid 1700's. His namewas originally JEAN BERNARD and he was a French Huguenot. He and his wife ANN may have been the first ofthis family to arrive in America although there are earlier Barner records. PAUL BERNARD was listed as being arefugee from Ile de Re' in France in 1685, and was believed to have gone first to "la Caroline" (probably theCarolinas). He arrived with "le jeune, sa femme, deux enfans, fugitifs de l 'ile de Re'" a total of 7 persons. JEAN BERNARD and his wife, ANN DELPISH were among the founders ofManakintown Va. in 1701. It is believed that they came to America to escape religious persecution inFrance during the early part of the 1700's.A "declaration of the opinion of the French Ministers who are now refugees inEngland, about some points of religion in opposition to the ocinians" was signed by JEAN BERNARD, Minister, in c1720. Huguenots is the name given to the French Calvinist Protestants of the16th and 17th centuries. Originally inspired by Martin Luther and later lead by John Calvin, the Huguenots emerged not onlyas a religious movement but also as a highly organized military force. The bloodshed and atrocities on both sides resultedin the mass slaughter of tens of thousands of Protestants. With the rise of Catholicism many Huguenots chose to emigrate fromFrance rather than convert. A last revolt of Huguenot peasants, called Camisards, in the Cevennes region was brutallysuppressed in 1702-11. It is believed that it was then that JEAN and ANNE BERNARD immigrated to America by way of England. It is obvious that the family changed their name to reflect a moregeneral heritage because of the persecution. Thus JEAN BERNARD became JOHN BARNER. Records which obviously belong to thisfamily are found spelled both ways. In the early Huguenot records of King William Parish, Virginia, wefind the following family: JEAN BERNARD and wife ANNE BERNARD dau. JUDITH b. Oct. 27, 1731 dau. REBECCA b. Apl 24, 1735 Son JEAN b. Apl 4, 1736 Dau. ANNE b. Oct. 6, 1738 son DAVID, b. Sept 21 1740 son FRANCOI b. Jan 24, 1743 son PIERRE b. July 14, 1747 JOHN BARNER, d. 1787, leaving a will recorded in Powhatan Co., Va.You will notice that the names of the children are almost identical, only with minor changes, and that there wereother children born after those listed above. His will was probated Sep-tember 20, 1787 and names his wife, ANN and thefollowing children: Son, JOHN, b. Apl. 4, 1736 (baptized as JEAN with godfather, CHARLEAMONNET and godmother, JUDITH TRABA. Son, DAVID, b. Sept 21, 17__. (listed in some records as aProtestant Refugee) Son, FRANCIS, b. Jan 24, 1743 (also known as FRANCOI) Son, WILLIAM Son, JACOB (this is our lineage) Son, BENJAMIN Daughter, JUDITH (FLOURNOY) b. Oct. 27, 1731 Daughter, REBECCA (PORTER) b. June 8, 1735 (There seems to have been another son, PETER, also known as PIERREalthough he isn't named in the will. Other records indicate that he does belong to this family. He apparently died beforehis father. He was b. July 14, 1747) As you can see, this is obviously the same family as the Huguenotfamily listed above. (The above birth records were found in records of King William Parish,Virginia) The will of JOHN BARNER reads as follows: Last Will and Testament of John Barner In the name of God Amen. John Barner was born abt. 1705, and died beforeSeptember 20, 1787 [Will of John Barner, dated July 19, 1786, proved September 20, 1787, PowhatanCounty, Virginia]. He was possibly the son of David Bernard who died abt 1715. John's wife, AnnDelpish, appears to be the daughter of Francis Delpish and his wife, Mary Dupre (daughter of John[Jean] Dupre). Ann Delpish Barner appears to have died shortly after her husband. There are many court records in Powhatan County, King William Parishconcerning this Barner family. In one record, JOHN BARNER enters into a contract with John Stephen Woodson to erect& build a Water grist Mill on a Water Course known by the name of the Lower Manakin Creek on land owned by JOHNBARNER, and that the two men share the profit of the mill. In regards to the children of JOHN BARNER, it appears that WILLIAM andBENJAMIN were living with their father and mother in 1787 and with their mother in 1788 and that all the othersons had moved away from home by this time. ANN BARNER died in c1788. Itis also believed that Francis Barner married Elizabeth Mays, circa July, 1787 - July, 1788, bythe Rev. Thomas Lundie, Rector of St. Andrew's Parish. [Ministers' Returns, BrunswickCounty, Virginia]. For a time he appears in the Brunswick County, Virginia, records but disappearsbefore 1800.
