John (Jean) Barner (Bernard)

Notes for John Barner: John Barner (Brunswick County, Virginia) John Barner, son of John Barner and Anne, was born on April 4, 1736,in Manakintown, Goochland [now Powhatan] County, Virginia. He is believed to have removed toBrunswick County, Virginia, about 1764. John Barner, of the Brunswick County, Virginia, married ElizabethHarrison, daughter of Benjamin Harrison [Will of Benjamin Harrison, dated December 29, 1789, provedJanuary 25, 1790, and recorded in Will Book 5, page 345, Brunswick County, Virginia]. JohnBarner died before May 7, 1822 [Will of John Barner, dated March 20, 1821, proved on May 27, 1822,and recorded in Will Book 9, page 223, Brunswick County, Virginia]. He is believed to have been theson of Jean [John] and Ann Bernar/Bernard [Barner] of Powhatan County, Virginia [Will of JohnBarner, dated July 19, 1786, proved September 20, 1787, Will Book ___, page ___, Powhatan County,Virginia]. The first record of John Barner [originally spelled Berner in thisrecord] in Brunswick County, Virginia, appears in the year 1764, when he purchased 140 acres ofland on Cocks Creek from John Nipper, Sr. [Deed dated March 26, 1764, and recorded in Deed Book 7,page 447, Brunswick County, Virginia]. On November 26, 1769, John Barner purchased another tractof land for 35 pounds, adjoining his land, from Reuben Booth and wife, Rebecca Booth, beingdescribed as beginning at the Hagberry tree on the South side of Cox's Creek, thence along an oldcart path to the corner on a Spanish Oak on Dixon's line, thence along the said Dixon's line to acorner Shrub oak, thence along Barner's line to a corner poplar, thence along the said line to acorner hickory on the said Cox's Creek, thence up the said Creek as it meanders to the beginning [Deeddated November 26, 1769, and recorded in Deed Book 9, page 564, Brunswick County, Virginia]. On August 18, 1779, John Barner purchased an additional 30 acres onthe lower side of Pole Creek from Benjamin Harrison, his father in law. This deed for witnessed byGreef (also spelled Grief) Harwell, James Harwell and Thomas Harrison [Deed dated August 18,1779, and proved on November 2, 1779, and recorded in Deed Book 13, page 409, Brunswick County,Virginia]. On June 20, 1790, after the death of his father in law, Benjamin Harrison, all of thechildren of Benjamin Harrison and the men who married his daughters, including John Barner, conveyeda slave to John Barner's daughter, Lucy Barner [Deed recorded on June 20, 1790, from BenjaminHarrison, James Harrison, John Hicks, John Cook, Myhill Collier, Robert Hicks, JohnBarner, Hannah Reese, children of Benjamin Harrison, deceased and Robert Hicks, John LettCook, John Hicks, Miles (sic) Collier and John Barner, those who married the daughters of saidBenjamin Harrison, deceased to Lucy Barner, daughter of John Barner, conveying one Negroboy named Fed. Witnesses were Thomas Harrison, W. Y. Harrison and Miles Hicks. DeedBook 15, page 1, Brunswick County, Virginia]. In 1796, John Barner purchased another tract of land from JohnDrummond and his wife [Deed Book 16, page 265, Brunswick County, Virginia]. On November 12, 1799,John Barner purchased 380 acres of land lying between Little Creek and Pole Creek, branches ofCockes Creek. This deed was proved on September 22, 1800, and was witnessed by Hamlin Hicks,Robert Harrison and William Shell [Deed Book 18, page 34, Brunswick County, Virginia]. OnSeptember 29, 1800, John Barner and his wife, Elizabeth Barner, conveyed this 380 acre tract of landto James Harrison [Deed Book 18, page 94, Brunswick County, Virginia]. There appears to be anadditional conveyance from Henry Harrison and wife, to John Barner in 1802 [Deed Book 18, page204, Brunswick County, Virginia]. On June 22, 1802, John Barner purchased an additional 232 acres ofland, from Mary Harrison, widow of Thomas Harrison, and Thomas Harrison's sons, Mark Harrisonand James Harrison. Also joining in the conveyance was James Harrison's wife, Tabitha Harrison.This land was located on Little Creek and Pole Creek [Deed Book 18, page 275, Brunswick County,Virginia]. On September 27, 1802, a 6.75 acre tract of land located on Pole Creek was conveyed toJohn Barner by James Judkin Harrison and wife, Susannah E. Harrison [Deed Book 18, page301, Brunswick County, Virginia]. On July 23, 1816, John Barner made conveyance of slaves tohis son in law, Benjamin Marable, and his son, Harrison Barner [Deed Book 23, pages 208 and236, Brunswick County, Virginia; See also Will of Benjamin Harrison of Meherrin Parish,Brunswick County, Virginia, dated December 29, 1789, proved January 25, 1790, and recorded in Will Book23, page 236, Brunswick County, Virginia]. Known children: 1.Harrison Barner 2.John Barner, Jr 3.Rebecca Barner 4.Elizabeth Ann Barner 5.Tabitha Barner 6.Judith Barner 7.Lucy Barner The 4th April, 1736, was born Jean Bernard, son of Jean Bernar and ofAnne Bernar, his wife; he had for godfather, Charle Amonnet; for godmother, Judith Trabu, Theparties have declared that the child was born the day and year above.
