Jacob Barner (Bernard)
Notes for Jacob Barner:Jacob BarnerJacob Barner, son of John Barner, may have removed initially fromPowhatanCounty, Virginia to Bedford County, Virginia, later to Prince Edward and Charlotte County,Virginia,and subsequently to Logan County, Kentucky, where he may have died. He may have been bornin 1749 and may have died on April 9, 1837 (Logan County, Kentucky). A headstone in theBarnerGraveyard, on what is/was Robert Kirkpatrick farm, in Logan County, Kentucky, indicatesthat theJacob Barner of Logan County, Kentucky, was born 1749, in County Down, Ireland,emigrated toAmerica in 1790, was many years a citizen of Russellville, and that he died on April 9,1837.Notwithstanding this Headstone, it is presently believed that the Jacob Barner of LoganCounty,Kentucky might have been the son of John and Anne Barner of Powhatan County, Virginia.Others buried in the Barner Graveyard in Logan County, Kentucky, are:
John, d. May 29, 1811, in his 8th yr.;
Susanna, d. June 23, 1841, inher 1st yr.; son & dau. of John & Mary BarnerSusanna, dau. of John & Eliza S. On thesame date, it appears that his brother, Francis Barner, also receiveda grantfor 1,100 acres, onboth sides of Little Falling River, extending over the ridge, on thebranches ofFalling River [GrantBook H, page 155, Virginia Land Records].Jacob Barner married Susanna North, ca. March 15, 1784 [MarriageBonds, PrinceEdward County,Virginia]. He purchased land in Charlotte County, Virginia, andresided therewith his family untilabout February, 1811.Known or Probable Children:1.William H. Barner2.John Barner, probable son of Jacob Barner and Susanna North, wasborn between1785 and1794, as there were two free white males between the ages of 16and under 26 inthe 1810Census, living in the household of Jacob Barner. One is believedto have beenWilliam H.Barner and the other should be the probable son, John Barner. Inaddition, aJohn Barnerwas witnessed to a Deed of Jacob Barner's, in February, 1811. Itis believedthat John Barnermarried and that he might have had a son named John Barner, Jr.Son JACOB BARNER married SUSANNA NORTH in Prince Edward County, Va. in1784.WILLIAM NORTH (herfather, maybe Unknown) was Surety, and the marriage bond was dated March 15,1784,Prince Edward Co., VA (taken fromCatherine Lindsay Knorr's "Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns ofPrinceEdward Co., Va. 1754-1810,")Jacob Barner and Susanna North were the parents ofWilliam H. Barner, Sr. b. March 1785, died 1842John Barner, b. 1787, died 1836JACOB was known to own quite a bit of land in Virginia and there arenumerousaccounts of the sale and purchase of theselands by him during the latter part of the 1780's. One such landpurchase readsas follows:"This indenture made this 15 Day of December Domo onethousand Seven hundred and eighty eight between Mildred Bunkley& Jesse Bunkley of Charlotte County one part, and JACOB BARNERof Prince Edward County of the other part Witnesseth that the saidMildred & Jesse Bunkley for and in consideration of the sum of SixtyThree pounds Current money of Virginia hath granted, bargained, andSold and by these presents doth fully clearly and absolutely grant,bargain & Sell unto the said JACOB BERNAR his heirs and assignsforever, one certain Tract or parcel of Land Lying on the west sideofHorsepen Creek in the County of Charlotte, containing one hundredand twenty Six acres Marked as followeth Beginning at a Spanish Oakin the said Creek thence along a line adjoining William Davis, S 81/Wpoles to a corner black Jack Thence along Peter Fores line So 29 W 78treeThence So 45 W 36 Poles to a White Oak Sapling thence So 20 E 90poles to a red oak on said Creek thence as the Creek meanders 287poles to the Beginning, together with all the appurtenances belongingthereof & every part and parcel thereof, to have and to hold thesaidAppurtenances,unto the said JACOB BERNAR & unto his heirs and assigns forever;"and the said Mildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkley doth for themselvesand their heirs Executors & Administrators Covenant promise and agreesaid Mildred Bunkley & Jesse Bunkley and their heirs and againsteveryother or persons Shall and will Warrant & forever defend, bythisPresents in Witness whereof the Said Mildred Bunkley & Jesse Bunkleyhath hereunto set our hand and Seals the day and year above Written.and Jesse Bunkley.Witnessed by William Marshall, WILLIAM NORTH, JUNR. and And. Marshall, WM. NORTH, and And. Wallace. At a Courtheld for Charlotte County the first day of June 1789. This Indentureand theMemorandum thereon endorsedwas proved in Court by the Oath of William Marshall and WILLIAMNORTH, JUN. tobe the act and Deed of the saidMildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkley. And at a Court held for CharlotteCounty the6th day of July 1789. The same wasfurther proved by the Oath of Andrew Wallace to be the act and Deedof the saidMildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkleyand ordered to be Recorded.Teste, Thomas Read, Cle. (Deed Book 6, page 59.Charlotte Co., Va)Another such deed was recorded in Deed book 7, page 10, Charlotte Co.,VA on the6th day of May 1796 and concernedthe purchase of 26 acres.Again in Deed book 7, page 229, Charlotte Co., VA, on Nov 5, 1790recorded thepurchase a parcel of land by JACOBBARNER.The 1810 Census of Charlotte County Virginia shows the following:JACOB BARNER, 2 Free white males (16 to under 26; 1 free white male(45 and over); 1 free white female (16 to under 26); 1 free whitefemale(45 and over); 6 slaves.(It appears that WILLIAM H. BARNER, son of JACOB AND SUSANNABARNER wasliving in the householdwith his parents in 1810, along with his wife [name unknown].)There alsoappears to be another son living in the samehousehold. This would be John Barner.Subsequent households nearby were of THOMAS NORTH (aged 45 and over);RICHARDNORTH, aged 26 to under45; and ANTHONY NORTH aged 16 to under 26. This is obviously thefamily ofSUSANNA NORTH, wife of JACOBBARNER.JOHN BARNER witnessed a deed for his son JACOB and signed with hisname, not hismark. Indicating that he was aneducated man.Then, on Oct 6, 1800, JACOB BARNER sold land (deed book 8, page 261,CharlotteCo., VA) and again on Feb 2,1811 sold another rather large tract of land (Deed book 12, page 19,CharlotteCo., Va.)JACOB BARNER seemed to be selling off most or all of his Virginiaholdings atthis time in order to relocate to Kentucky.It is evident that JACOB BARNER and his family left Virginiaabout 1811.We assume that they went, first toLogan County, Kentucky, as there is evidence that this family, alongwith otherrelatives, were there during 1811 and1812. There are numerous court records of deeds, abstracts, andcourtappearances of BENJAMIN BARNER,FRANCIS BARNER, J. B. BARNER, AND S. W. BARNER during this time.While noattempt has been made todetermine the relationship of these mentioned, it is quite evidentthat theywere all related. We also know that the familywas in Logan County in 1820 because WILLIAM W. BARNER, son of WILLIAMH. BARNERwas born there in 1820.However, for a short time they must have been in Colbert Co. AlabamabecauseWILLIAM W. BARNER had a daughterborn there in 1809.By 1830 both JACOB BARNER and his son, WILLIAM H. BARNER had migratedtoAlabama. In the 1830 censusrecord of Montgomery County, AL, pg 189, we find JACOB BARNER andin the1830 census record in nearbyWilkes County, GA , we find WILLIAM H. BARNER (75-299).JACOB BARNER may have returned to Logan County, Kentucky and diedthere. Awill which may be his is found inwill book F, pages 275-276, written 10 May 1833. In it he leaves histwo sons,WILLIAM and JOHN equal division ofhis estate. He also orders that his servant, Lewis aged about45, be setfree. The executor of the will was son JohnBarner and it was witnessed by Thomas M. Smith, R.L.Emmet, and Lee W.Hendrick.The signature is written and theprobate date is 24 April 1837. In the will, he mentions that WILLIAMand JOHNare his only children.There is some question, however, if this is indeed our JACOB BARNER.There is aBarner Cemetery in Logan County,KY which contains numerous headstones, one of which is for JACOBBARNER andreads "born 1749 in County Down,Ireland, emigrated to America in 1790, many years a citizen ofRussellville, d.Apr 9, 1837". If this headstone is accurate,and this is the JACOB BARNER of the above mentioned will, then itcould not bethe same JACOB BARNER of Virginia.I tend to believe that the headstone may have been placed years laterand isincorrect. There is also the possibility that theirpast lives were fabricated because of their status as refugees fromtheFrench. To date, no other record has been foundfor the death of our JACOB BARNER. The Barner Cemetery is saidto be nearRussellville, Kentucky on RobertKirkpatrick farm. Other headstones in the cemetery are forJOHN, d. May 29, 1811, in his 8th year.SUSANNA, d. June 23, 1841, in her 1st year (this date musthave been copiedwrong and should have been 1811 .The above said to be son and daughter of JOHN & MARY BARNER)SUSANNA, dau of JOHN & ELIZA S. BARNER, Jan 10, 1823-July 2, 1826Also buried in this cemetery were the mother of Josiah Emmitt,d. 1823 at aged61 years, and Catherine E., dau ofJosiah Emmitt, June 1, 1805-Nov 20, 1833. This same Josiah Emmitt wasa witnessto the will of Jacob Barner, althoughthe connection between the two families has not been established.JOHN BARNER, son of JACOB BARNER AND SUSANNA NORTH apparently settledinSheffield Alabama and hishome on Tenth Avenue and 26th Street was the oldest house inSheffield, stillstanding in the 1990's.
