Jacob Barner (Bernard)

Notes for Jacob Barner: Jacob Barner Jacob Barner, son of John Barner, may have removed initially fromPowhatan County, Virginia to Bedford County, Virginia, later to Prince Edward and Charlotte County,Virginia, and subsequently to Logan County, Kentucky, where he may have died. He may have been bornin 1749 and may have died on April 9, 1837 (Logan County, Kentucky). A headstone in theBarner Graveyard, on what is/was Robert Kirkpatrick farm, in Logan County, Kentucky, indicatesthat the Jacob Barner of Logan County, Kentucky, was born 1749, in County Down, Ireland,emigrated to America in 1790, was many years a citizen of Russellville, and that he died on April 9,1837. Notwithstanding this Headstone, it is presently believed that the Jacob Barner of LoganCounty, Kentucky might have been the son of John and Anne Barner of Powhatan County, Virginia. Others buried in the Barner Graveyard in Logan County, Kentucky, are:
John, d. May 29, 1811, in his 8th yr.;
Susanna, d. June 23, 1841, inher 1st yr.; son & dau. of John & Mary Barner Susanna, dau. of John & Eliza S. Barner, Jan. 10 1823-July 2, 1826 Mother of Josiah Emmitt, d. 1823, aged 61 yrs. Catherine E., dau. of Josiah Emmitt, June 1, 1805-Nov. 20, 1833 Mary F., dau. of Warren & Minerva Jackson, Nov. 21, 1831-May 29, 1833 Sarah Orr, of Williamson Co., Tenn., d. July 19, 1835, aged 68 yrs. James W., Mar. 1, 1831-Jan. 17, 1832; infant son, Aug. 4-5, 1833; sonsof James B. Thompson Eliza R., consort of James Thompson, Nov. 12, 1802-July 30, 1835 [Kentucky Cemetery Records, Volume I, compiled, edited and indexed bythe Kentucky Records Research Committee, Kentucky Society Daughters of the AmericanRevolution, 1960, page 279] On December 20, 1782, a Jacob Barner received a grant for 575 acres inBedford County, located on the West Side of Little Falling River [Grant Book H, page 184,Virginia Land Records]. On the same date, it appears that his brother, Francis Barner, also receiveda grant for 1,100 acres, on both sides of Little Falling River, extending over the ridge, on thebranches of Falling River [Grant Book H, page 155, Virginia Land Records]. Jacob Barner married Susanna North, ca. March 15, 1784 [MarriageBonds, Prince Edward County, Virginia]. He purchased land in Charlotte County, Virginia, andresided there with his family until about February, 1811. Known or Probable Children: 1.William H. Barner 2.John Barner, probable son of Jacob Barner and Susanna North, wasborn between 1785 and 1794, as there were two free white males between the ages of 16and under 26 in the 1810 Census, living in the household of Jacob Barner. One is believedto have been William H. Barner and the other should be the probable son, John Barner. Inaddition, a John Barner was witnessed to a Deed of Jacob Barner's, in February, 1811. Itis believed that John Barner married and that he might have had a son named John Barner, Jr. Son JACOB BARNER married SUSANNA NORTH in Prince Edward County, Va. in1784. WILLIAM NORTH (her father, maybe Unknown) was Surety, and the marriage bond was dated March 15,1784, Prince Edward Co., VA (taken from Catherine Lindsay Knorr's "Marriage Bonds and Ministers' Returns ofPrince Edward Co., Va. 1754-1810,") Jacob Barner and Susanna North were the parents of William H. Barner, Sr. b. March 1785, died 1842 John Barner, b. 1787, died 1836 JACOB was known to own quite a bit of land in Virginia and there arenumerous accounts of the sale and purchase of these lands by him during the latter part of the 1780's. One such landpurchase reads as follows: "This indenture made this 15 Day of December Domo one thousand Seven hundred and eighty eight between Mildred Bunkley & Jesse Bunkley of Charlotte County one part, and JACOB BARNER of Prince Edward County of the other part Witnesseth that the said Mildred & Jesse Bunkley for and in consideration of the sum of Sixty Three pounds Current money of Virginia hath granted, bargained, and Sold and by these presents doth fully clearly and absolutely grant, bargain & Sell unto the said JACOB BERNAR his heirs and assigns forever, one certain Tract or parcel of Land Lying on the west sideof Horsepen Creek in the County of Charlotte, containing one hundred and twenty Six acres Marked as followeth Beginning at a Spanish Oak in the said Creek thence along a line adjoining William Davis, S 81/W poles to a corner black Jack Thence along Peter Fores line So 29 W 78tree Thence So 45 W 36 Poles to a White Oak Sapling thence So 20 E 90 poles to a red oak on said Creek thence as the Creek meanders 287 poles to the Beginning, together with all the appurtenances belonging thereof & every part and parcel thereof, to have and to hold the saidAppurtenances, unto the said JACOB BERNAR & unto his heirs and assigns forever; "and the said Mildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkley doth for themselves and their heirs Executors & Administrators Covenant promise and agree said Mildred Bunkley & Jesse Bunkley and their heirs and againstevery other or persons Shall and will Warrant & forever defend, bythis Presents in Witness whereof the Said Mildred Bunkley & Jesse Bunkley hath hereunto set our hand and Seals the day and year above Written. and Jesse Bunkley. Witnessed by William Marshall, WILLIAM NORTH, JUNR. and And. Wallace.(This WILLIAM NORTH would have been Susanna's brother.) Memorandum That peaceable & Quiet Possession and Seison of the Land and premises within Mentioned was given to the winin (Unknown) Named JACOB BERNAR in own to have and to hold to him and his heirs forever according to the true Virtue of the within Writtendeed. Signed by Mildred Bunkley (by her mark) and Jesse Bunkley. Witnessed by Wm. Marshall, WM. NORTH, and And. Wallace. At a Court held for Charlotte County the first day of June 1789. This Indentureand the Memorandum thereon endorsed was proved in Court by the Oath of William Marshall and WILLIAMNORTH, JUN. to be the act and Deed of the said Mildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkley. And at a Court held for CharlotteCounty the 6th day of July 1789. The same was further proved by the Oath of Andrew Wallace to be the act and Deedof the said Mildred Bunkley and Jesse Bunkley and ordered to be Recorded. Teste, Thomas Read, Cle. (Deed Book 6, page 59.Charlotte Co., Va) Another such deed was recorded in Deed book 7, page 10, Charlotte Co.,VA on the 6th day of May 1796 and concerned the purchase of 26 acres. Again in Deed book 7, page 229, Charlotte Co., VA, on Nov 5, 1790recorded the purchase a parcel of land by JACOB BARNER. The 1810 Census of Charlotte County Virginia shows the following: JACOB BARNER, 2 Free white males (16 to under 26; 1 free white male (45 and over); 1 free white female (16 to under 26); 1 free whitefemale (45 and over); 6 slaves. (It appears that WILLIAM H. BARNER, son of JACOB AND SUSANNABARNER was living in the household with his parents in 1810, along with his wife [name unknown].)There also appears to be another son living in the same household. This would be John Barner. Subsequent households nearby were of THOMAS NORTH (aged 45 and over);RICHARD NORTH, aged 26 to under 45; and ANTHONY NORTH aged 16 to under 26. This is obviously thefamily of SUSANNA NORTH, wife of JACOB BARNER. JOHN BARNER witnessed a deed for his son JACOB and signed with hisname, not his mark. Indicating that he was an educated man. Then, on Oct 6, 1800, JACOB BARNER sold land (deed book 8, page 261,Charlotte Co., VA) and again on Feb 2, 1811 sold another rather large tract of land (Deed book 12, page 19,Charlotte Co., Va.) JACOB BARNER seemed to be selling off most or all of his Virginiaholdings at this time in order to relocate to Kentucky. It is evident that JACOB BARNER and his family left Virginiaabout 1811. We assume that they went, first to Logan County, Kentucky, as there is evidence that this family, alongwith other relatives, were there during 1811 and 1812. There are numerous court records of deeds, abstracts, andcourt appearances of BENJAMIN BARNER, FRANCIS BARNER, J. B. BARNER, AND S. W. BARNER during this time.While no attempt has been made to determine the relationship of these mentioned, it is quite evidentthat they were all related. We also know that the family was in Logan County in 1820 because WILLIAM W. BARNER, son of WILLIAMH. BARNER was born there in 1820. However, for a short time they must have been in Colbert Co. Alabamabecause WILLIAM W. BARNER had a daughter born there in 1809. By 1830 both JACOB BARNER and his son, WILLIAM H. BARNER had migratedto Alabama. In the 1830 census record of Montgomery County, AL, pg 189, we find JACOB BARNER andin the 1830 census record in nearby Wilkes County, GA , we find WILLIAM H. BARNER (75-299). JACOB BARNER may have returned to Logan County, Kentucky and diedthere. A will which may be his is found in will book F, pages 275-276, written 10 May 1833. In it he leaves histwo sons, WILLIAM and JOHN equal division of his estate. He also orders that his servant, Lewis aged about45, be set free. The executor of the will was son John Barner and it was witnessed by Thomas M. Smith, R.L.Emmet, and Lee W.Hendrick. The signature is written and the probate date is 24 April 1837. In the will, he mentions that WILLIAMand JOHN are his only children. There is some question, however, if this is indeed our JACOB BARNER.There is a Barner Cemetery in Logan County, KY which contains numerous headstones, one of which is for JACOBBARNER and reads "born 1749 in County Down, Ireland, emigrated to America in 1790, many years a citizen ofRussellville, d. Apr 9, 1837". If this headstone is accurate, and this is the JACOB BARNER of the above mentioned will, then itcould not be the same JACOB BARNER of Virginia. I tend to believe that the headstone may have been placed years laterand is incorrect. There is also the possibility that their past lives were fabricated because of their status as refugees fromthe French. To date, no other record has been found for the death of our JACOB BARNER. The Barner Cemetery is saidto be near Russellville, Kentucky on Robert Kirkpatrick farm. Other headstones in the cemetery are for JOHN, d. May 29, 1811, in his 8th year. SUSANNA, d. June 23, 1841, in her 1st year (this date musthave been copied wrong and should have been 1811 . The above said to be son and daughter of JOHN & MARY BARNER) SUSANNA, dau of JOHN & ELIZA S. BARNER, Jan 10, 1823-July 2, 1826 Also buried in this cemetery were the mother of Josiah Emmitt,d. 1823 at aged 61 years, and Catherine E., dau of Josiah Emmitt, June 1, 1805-Nov 20, 1833. This same Josiah Emmitt wasa witness to the will of Jacob Barner, although the connection between the two families has not been established. JOHN BARNER, son of JACOB BARNER AND SUSANNA NORTH apparently settledin Sheffield Alabama and his home on Tenth Avenue and 26th Street was the oldest house inSheffield, still standing in the 1990's. It was originally of log construction and was an ante-bellum plantation home. A part ofhis plantation was in the early town of York Bluff. He is buried in the Tuscumbia Oakwood Cemeteryin Tuscumbia, AL. John Barner had at least one child, John Barner Jr. WILLIAM H. BARNER, son of JACOB BARNER AND SUSANNA NORTH was bornMarch 1785 in W.
