Wells Deed Book B 26 Sep. 1825 " Be it known to all men and whom it may concern and unto all whom these presents shall or may come, that I, William James Mayo, of Floyd County, State of Kentucky for divers good causes and considerations, hereunto moving as an ardent desire striking to do unto all men as I would they should do unto me, have this day liberated, manumit, and emancipated and by these presents do liberate, manumit, and emancipate the following slaves now in my possession, to wit; Nancy, born on 15 Dec. 1799, and her son Pompey, born on 17 Mar. 1819, and also her daughter, Caroline, born on 19 Jan. 1822. All which slaves I wish and desire to assume and take unto themselves the surname "ISBELL". In testimony of all and singular the premises, I, the said William James Mayo, have here unto subscribe my own proper hand and have affixed my seal the 26 day of our Lord 1825, in the Commonwealth of Kentucky and the 49th year of the North American Independence".
