William James David Mayo

William James David Mayo and Nancy Thompson Mayo, his second cousin, were married in Butts County, Georgia. They moved to Pickens County, Alabama before June of 1845. They eventually settled in Tishomingo County, Mississippi, sometime between 1848 and 1850. William James David Mayo served in Company A of the Mississippi Infantry's 26th Regiment. He and two of his sons, Anderson Thompson Mayo and James G. Mayo, enlisted August 19, 1961 in Iuka, Mississippi. During his life, William James David Mayo, was mainly known as a farmer. However, he was listed as a mill worker in the 1860 and 1880 census of Tishomingo County. Family tradition tells of him carrying mail by horseback from Jacinto, Mississippi to Huntsville, Alabama in the latter part of his life.
