John Allen Sherrod

Virgil Dodson Sherrod's father was John Allen Sherrod. John Allen was born in Tennessee and came to Arkansas around 1880. His siblings were William Henry, Mary, Benjamin F., Roxanne and Susan. Have been unable to locate the parents of this family. In 1860 the six children were with different families which would indicate the parents were dead. Can't locate the family in 1850.

Posted by Kimberly Hunt to the Sherrod Family Genealogy Forum: I have a Virgil Sherrod married to a Minnie. I know they had a daughter Geneva b May 5, 1896 in Ken. I do not know if this is a connection or not. I have been having great difficulty in finding anyone in this line.

Mary Sherrod
Ben F. Sherrod from Faulkner County, Arkansas in 1880 and 1900. On the 1880 Faulkner County Census he is Living in Cypress Twp. he is 23 and says he was born in Tennessee. Living with him are Mary (sister) age 30 and widowed born in Tennessee, Roxanne age 29 (sister) single and born in Tennessee, Laura Bowman age 19 and married born in Tennessee(she is my great grandmother and married William A. Allen)she is listed as a niece, Amanda age 16 born Tennessee, Alice age 12, and Fanny age 7 all born in Tennessee (all except Mary and Roxanne are listed as nieces.

I am not at all sure of my Sherrod line in Faulkner County, Arkansas. I only know that my great grandmother was Mary Sherrod Bowman Flowers Bradbury. She had a brother named Benjamin F. Sherrod, John Allen Sherrod, William H. Sherrod, a sister named Susan Sherrod who I believe married a James Sumner amd another siste names Roxanne Sherrod. They all are listed in Faulkner County, Arkansas in 1880. My great grandmother was Laura C.(Caroline)Bowman who married W. A. Allen September 05, 1878 in Madison County, Tennessee. They are also living in Faulkner County, Arkansas in 1880. This side of the family is a complete mystrey to me. Benjamin F. Sherrod
Seeking information on Ben F. Sherrod from Faulkner County, Arkansas in 1880 and 1900. On the 1880 Faulkner County Census he is Living in Cypress Twp. he is 23 and says he was born in Tennessee. Then in 1900 Benjamin Sherrod is in Faulkner County, Arkansas Born February 1852 in Tennessee Listed as single, then there is Annie(who I think is Roxanne) born June 1850 but this time says born Mississippi then there is a Willie Sherrell, born November 1882 in Arkansas. Benjamin is a Guardian to him according Faulkner County Guardian Bonds Book A it list B.F. Sherrod was guardian of Willie Sherrill. After 1900 I don't find him. I think there must have been two Ben F. Sherrod's in Arkansas as there is one who died in White County, Arkansas July 14, 1901. At first I thought he was my Ben F. Sherrod, but now I don't know. June Boyer in her book "Our Heritage" gives Purtandy's parents as William and Sarah Walden and shows their children as: 1. Cornelia D. Walden b. 1817 m. James H. Gibbs 1853, no children 2. Richard E. Walden b. 10-16-1818 d. 10-8-1903 m. Mary Leek 1-25-1843 3. Purtandy D. Walden b. 1820 m. Thomas Sherrod 2-22-1836. 4. Erastus F. Walden b. 1822 m. Paralee Leek 1845, sister of Mary Leek 5. John Walden b. 1823 d. 1898 m. Nancy (Mary) Young 3-19-1845 6. Rowena Walden b. 1825 7. William Walden b. 1828 8. Susan Malvina Walden b. 1830 d. 3-27-1872 m. James Bennett 6-17-1853 John M. and Nancy Mary (Young) Walden are my second great grandparents and I'm trying to document his parents. I did find John and Nancy in Williamson co., TX in 1850 (M432 Roll 916, Milam and Williamson District, Williamson county, TX; Page 340, Dwelling 139/150 - enumerated 9 September 1850) and next door to them (Dwelling 140/151) is Hugh Walden, also aged 27, also born in Alabama. Bess Hester is a descendant of Hugh (Thomas Hughell and Rachel [Hays] Walden) and believes they were brothers. I find that Purtandy and siblings were born in TN, and John M. is consistent in census records that he was born in Alabama, so I tend to think he is not Purtandy's brother. However, I'm open to discussion either way. The surname is spelled differently in each census (Walden, Waltron, Walton) but each time he shows Alabama as his birth place. We have copies of the Bible pages listing his and Nancy's birth/death dates as well as some of their children's birth dates -- but no info on his parents or siblings. From June, I understand that Richard Ervin Walden of Howard county, AR is Purtandy's brother.

All eleven (11) children were born in Rutherford County, TN, city of LaVergne. All Walden siblings were: Cornelia D., Richard E., Erastus, John, William, Susan Malvina, Rowena, Nancy D., Florentios, Isora H., Damaris. Jo L.
