Selected Families and Individuals
Notes
James Sherrod
1790 Wayne Co, NC Federal Census Shows:
Benjamin Sherrod - 1, 1, 2, 0, 2
William Sherrard - 2, 0, 0, 0, 0; ( I suspect this is Jame's father and another brother names William as in later census records, a William continues to reside here.)
John Sherrord - 2, 0, 3, 0, 16
______________________________________
Jame's son William was born July 22, 1807 in North Carolina so they must have moved to GA after that but before 1820
We can see that on the census records, James consistantly spelled his name as Sherod or Sherrod never Sherrard. Thus I feel it almost certain that James' father is Benjamin.

We can see immediately that Elizabeth is not here. It would appear that Jame's wife has died. By examining the ages of the children we can determine that she almost certainly died 1810/1815.

1850 Jefferson Co, GA census
5 633 633 Sherod James 80 M Farming 7,000 Wayne Cty NC
6 633 633 Sherod Elizabeth 58 F Jeff Cty Ga
7 633 633 Sherod John H 19 M Farming Jeff Cty Ga
James states his age as 80 years and that he was born in Wayne Cty., NC. He is living with wife Elizabeth (58) born in Jefferson Cty. and son John H. (19) also born in Jefferson Cty.
There is another Sherod on this census also. William, age 6 months and born in Jefferson Cty. He is living with Warren Allen (26), his wife, Thany (Shany?) (27), and their child Lany (1 yr). They are visit #308. At visit #319 is Sherod Allen (58) and his family, wife Nancy (57), daughter Nancy E. (15), and son William (23). From past experience, it appears likely that Warren is the son of a Sherod and Sherod received his name from his mother who was also a Sherod and is probably a sister to James. Don't know exactly where little William fits in to this senario.

On Tuesday, November 9, 1852, William Sherrod (Executer of the Estate of James Sherrod) placed a notice to sell land in Jefferson Co, GA belonging to James Sherrod, deceased in the newspaper in Washington Co, GA
Elizabeth Tomlinson
1860 Emanuel Co, GA Federal Census:
Elizabeth is now living with John L. (26)(a doctor), his wife, Elizabeth M.(22), and their children, Mary F.(7), Martha A. (6), Bettie H. (4), and Sarah A. (2). Her husband is no long seen so must have died between 1850 and 1860.
Elizabeth Tomlinson (Chisolm) is the wife of James for the following reasons.
A) the 1850 Census of Jefferson Cty., Ga. gives his wife's name as Elizabeth and her age as 58.
B) the 1860 Census of Emanuel Cty., Ga. shows her living with son John. James is dead as would be expected as he was 80 years old in 1850.
C) Elizabeth is the mother of John and Joseph from the will of her mother Silvia Chisolm from which we also get her maiden name.
D) In the marriage records of her son John, she is mentioned as born in 1792.
Jefferson Co, GA Wills:
SYLVIA CHISOLM 12/18/1838:9/2/1850, p. 326-327
Daus: Mary Colley (land whereon I now live), Elizabeth Sherrod. Son: William Tomlinson.
Grsons: Joseph and John Sherrod, Henry Co. And Cherokee Co. Land. Exr: Friend, Henry I.

SYLVIA CHISOLM, first LWT, 3/23/1829: ---- , p. 327-328
Son: William. To: Henry B. Todd and Littleberry Bostick in tr for my dau., Elizabeth Sherrod
and her ch. Dau: Mary Coley. Grdau: Sarah Sherrod, dau of Elizabeth Sherrod. Wits: John
Belcher, Washington Belcher, M. A. M. Bostick.
Sylvia was previously married to Aaron Tomlinson and Elizabeth is the daughter of that marriage. Aaron died in 1828 and according to "Historical Southern Families", his widow married a "Chisolm". However, there is a Sylvy Chisolm living alone a few doors away from Aaron on the 1820 Jefferson Co, census who fits this Sylvia in terms of age so what was actually going on here is a mystery at this time.

William G. Sherrod Jr.
Description: living with his father, mother, and siblings
William is with wife, Eady(23), daughter Eliza(5), andsons, Jeremiah(3) and William(1 mo).
The record states:
Sherrod, W. G. private April 22,1862. Wounded near Petersburg, Va. in 1864. Paroled at Augusta, Ga. May 26,1865

Visit #141 finds William(40) and Eda(30) with childrenEliza(16), Jeremiah(14), William(12), Elizabeth(6), and Hinehey?(1,male)
William is farming with wife, Eady(40) and children;Eliza(25), Jeremiah(22), William B.(20), Janie J.(14), Henry? R.(9),James(9), Sarah H.(6), and Annie L.(1). William is 50 years old. Henry& James may be twins
William(70) and Eda(65) still have a large householdconsisting of:
Elizabeth Sherrod Beckton(34) and her three children, Callie(14),Lila(12), and Bessie(8). Elizabeth's husband apparently died between1892 and 1900. 1893 or 1894 would be most likely. Also, we haveJames(28) and single, William?, 21 and single, and Joseph(18). Edaindicates they have had ten children but only nine survive. From thiswe can determine that either Eliza, Janie, Henry, or Sarah is nowdead.
William is listed on the 1860 census twice, once with his parents, William G. Sr. and once with his wife, Eady. We know thi sbecause the second entry with his wife Eady also lists children. On the 1880 census, this same family has father William G. Sr. living with it. Perhaps he was visiting his father on the day of the census and the census taker thus recorded him there and when recording the other family, Eady told them of her husband and he was thus recorded there also.
He also is recorded in two different companies in the Civil War. But the similarity of the two records makes their description of the same fellow undeniable. This often happened as men were moved from one Company to another. I have included both records so they can be examined.

William B.(57) and Moselle(50) have now been married for23 years. They have had three children but all have died. Living withthem now is Mattie L.(10) whom they adopted.
William B.(60) and Julia E.(56) are living with daughter,Mattie r.(20). On the 1900 census, Julia's name appears to be Moselle.I have no explanation for the discrepancy at this time. But it appearsunlikely that there would be more than one William B. of the rightage, with a wife of the right age, would have only one child with theright name and age, in the same area. Thus, I feel these must be thesame family.

Description: where he was killed in action during the Civil War
This is probably the same Joseph L. that was in the CivilWar IRN # 1843, but I have no proof yet. He is not apparently on the1850 census of Emanuel Cty at which time he may have been away at school if, indeed, his father is one of the people on that census, as seems likely.
This may be the Joseph mentioned in IRN 1962.
