Canute I "The Great" Sveynsson King of England & Denmark
He acceded on November 30, 1016, and reigned from 1016 to 1035. Canute became king of Denmark in 1019 and Norway in 1028. He died on November 12, 1035 at Shaftesbury, Dorset, England and was interred at Winchester Cathedral, London, England.
He defended England from Viking attacks in 1017, 1026, 1028. Canute went on a pilgrimage to Rome in 1027 and attended the coronation of the Emperor Conrad II. According to legend, he proved to flatterers the limits of his powers by demonstrating his inability to induce the waves to recede.
He is also associated with AELFGIVA OF NORTHAMPTON (Ælgifu).
