Charles Anthony Sherrod

Lt. Charles Sherrod has been awarded the Soldier's Medal by direction of the President for heroism in Germany of May 10, 1945. He was a member of an ordnance company. The award was made for a heroic act performed two days afater the unconditional surrender of Germany. The citation reads:

Receiving word that two American Soldiors lay wounded in an enemy mine field. Lt. Sherrod immediately went to their rescue. Walking through more than 50 yards of the field, studded with German Schu mines he reached the two soldiers to find one dead and the other dying. Administering immediate first aid, he waited until a litter could be brough and with the assistance of another soldier carried the wounded man to safety. Lt Sherrod's heroism without regard for personal safety reflects high credit upon himself and the Army of the United States.
