John Alvin Sherrod
SHAMROCK - John Alvin Sherrod, 77, died Friday, Dec. 6, 2002, in
Ashland, Ky.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Wright Funeral Directors Chapel
with Joe G. Jernigan, pastor of Calvary Christian Fellowship Church,
and Pedro Juarez, deacon, officiating. Burial will be in Shamrock
Cemetery.
Mr. Sherrod had worked for United Carbon Black in Shamrock for many
years and was then transferred to Ashland Oil in Houston. Later, he
was transferred to the home office of Ashland Inc. in Ashland, where
he retired in 1981.
Mr. Sherrod was born on Nov. 30, 1925, to the late Robert E. and
Katherine Sherrod of Fort Worth. He married Betty Burks in Fort Worth
on June 25, 1949. He was a veteran, serving in the Army during World
War II.
He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church in Ashland, and also a
member of Ashland Oil Retirees Club. The Kentucky Colonel award had
been presented to Mr. Sherrod by the governor of Kentucky for his many
civic services performed in his community.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Mitchell Sherrod and wife, Susan,
of Greenup, Ky.; a daughter, Melissa Rackley of Houston; three
grandchildren, Rodney Sherrod and wife, Teresa, of Versailles, Ky.,
Ashlyn Rackley of Houston and Justin Rackley of College Station; two
great-granddaughters, Brittany Sherrod and Trinity Sherrod, both of
Versailles; three brothers, Robert W. Sherrod and wife, Frances, of
Burleson, William E. Sherrod and wife, Billye, of Fort Worth and Joe
R. Sherrod and wife, Charlotte, of Dallas.
The family suggests memorials be to Community Hospice, 1538 Central
Ave., Ashland, KY 41101; or a favorite charity.
