Ann Sherrod

Ann is listed on the page 159b of the 1850 Franklin Co, AL Federal Census. She does not have a husband shown. She is a planter with land valued at $40,000 and was born in VA. She is quite wealthy.
Children with her are Bolton (13), Fed (11), and Holise (8). The last name may be wrong as it is difficult to read the enumerators handwriting.

Fred Sherrod

This letter mentions Fred Sherred. Could this be the same guy?

Letter from James E. Shelley to his sister, Harriet Minerva Shelley. Mentions religious revival services at the river and consolidating the regiments.
Demopolis, Ala
Camp 30th Ala Regt.
Oct. 12th, 1863
Dear Minerva,
I got here yesterday about 12 o’clock all safe and sound. Found Charlie (most probably James' brother Charles} <http://www.geocities.com/heartland/pines/6283/charlesmshelley.html> , Whit and all well except Billie Houston who is quite feeble, but won’t give up. The boys all seemed glad to see me, said they had been getting on badly since I left. I stayed all night in Selma with Bettie. She treated me mighty clever, had plenty to eat. She has plenty of bacon, flour, molasses, milk and chicken. Also coffee and tea. She is fixed up very well in her house and seems to be satisfied but I’m afraid she won’t remain that way very long. She has all her Negros at home, two women and two boys.
Tell father not to pay more than $25 a month for Britton. Charlie thinks of getting one from Col. Player and he will suit as well as Britton. I know we can get him for $25, but if he can get Britton that cheap, He had better do it and we can send Col. Player’s boy back if he comes. Gen’l. Pettus will take command of this brigade tomorrow. Gen'l ________ says it was alright about my staying at home so long, he didn’t expect me back so soon. Tell the Widow C________________ that Charlie has another sweetheart, has a widow as big - very near – as old Mrs. Stockdale. She’s rich and is trying her best to take Charlie in. He is having his fun out of her. She talks a little like Mrs. C.
Page 2
Comes to see Charlie often – has just left here this evening. I don’t think he has been to see her yet. She brought three other ladies out with her this evening. I didn’t get acquainted with them. I don’t know when we will leave here, nor where we will go. Col. Patterson has tendered his resignation, but couldn’t get a surgeon’s certificate and only has taken a furlough for 60 days.
We’re getting a little more to eat now than we did when I left. The brigade commissary (Major Hollingsworth) is messing with us and he gets us plenty of beef and flour. We can buy potatoes in the country for $2.50 a bushel..
Tell father to be certain to send that traveling guide he brought home from Iowa by the first chance. I forgot to bring it with me. He will find it in one of the pidgeonholes of the desk at the office. There is some talk of consolidating the regiments here that can’t number over 400. We will have a big review next Thursday by Gen’l Hardee and I understand that he intends consolidating those that can’t go over 400. Ours will go 450 for duty and 80 present & absent – pretty good regt. ________ We have been getting some _________. I might have remained at home a week longer and it would have been alright.
Tell father I promised Dr. Moore that George would go down and do
Page 3
Some work for him next Wednesday. He will finish Cliett’s work by that time. He must be certain to charge him just as long as he can hold his breath. If Moore will let him have thread at old prices, charge him old proces for the work. He wants some wood work and some brick work done. If he can see _______ Finch when he comes to Talladega, tell him to remind him to be certain to get the ___________ from the camp of instruction and to send the men on as soon as possible. Bill McConnell got a letter from Fred Sherred stating that Ike Madding was killed in the last fight in Tennessee. He was shot through the brain and killed instantly. Bill takes it as hard as if he had been his brother.
I will write to father tomorrow or next day. Tell Sallie I will write her soon. Also Ma, Pollie and all the rest of the homefolks. (M. and Ware considered home folks).
Tell Mrs. Whitson the Dr. is getting on finely. I guess he will write her tonight. The meeting is still going on. A great many have joined the different churches. A great many have been baptized in the Black Womor (?) River. The preachers are very near worn out. Mr. Underwood is in quite delicate health. Charlie says

He will write to some of you soon. He is very busy now but will have more leisure next week. My Cap’t. hasn’t come in yet. I read a letter from him today asking me to get him an extension to remain at home two or three weeks longer. I did so and sent it to him today. If he will stay away a week or two, I will have a good company. It is pretty full now and I will have the discipline perfect before long if he will stay away. Give my love to all the folks and write to me often. .I can’t think of anything else and will stop.
Your affectionate brother,
James E. Shelley

Allen Family Cemetery is a small site SE of Belton with only three markers.
It is on the roadside as you take Elm Grove Rd 2.4 miles south from FM 436.
Going south, it is next to the second turn after crossing the Lampasas River.

SHERROD, William M. June 9, 1851 - January 16, 1913
SHERROD, Mattie A. April 21, 1855 - February 4, 1938

ALLEN, Mrs. N.H. December 18, 1834 - January 9, 1928

ALLEN, C. L. July 6, 1833 (Green Co., GA) - May 9, 1895
(husband of N.H. ALLEN above)

It seems highly probable that this is the same William Shirod who was listed with the family of Warren Allen on the 1850 Jefferson Co, GA Federal Census.
