Henson Cemetery is about 2.5 miles E. of Hwy.35 on the Cascilla Road
This was a family cemetery.

This Cemetery updated, corrected and proofed February 1999.

The land was given for the cemetery by James Anthony Shannon. He
owned several hundred acres around this cemetery. The families of
Staten, Shannon, Mullen, Newton and Pressgrove and the rest of the
folks buried here are related by birth or marriage.

I have placed some of my grandparents, Thomas & Selia Staten, Harvey
and Betsy Elizabeth Sherrod Staten in this cemetery, because I do not
know where they were buried. The land patent office shows that Thomas,
and Harvey Staton purchased land in this area in the early 1800's. I
have no dates of death and the birth dates are estimated from the census.

Uriah J. Newell

Date Posted: 14-Dec-2002
Surname(s): COOK : HUDDLESTON : NEWELL : SAUNDERS : SHERROD
Query Text: I would love to hear from any descendant of THOMAS and MARY NEWELL. They were in ARK as early as 1829 in St. Francis Co. They were living in Randolph Co when Thomas died leaving a will naming wife MARY, and 6 little children, ELIZABETH (who married MILFORD SAUNDERS), MARY ANN (POLLY), PERNESA, NATHAN (who married NANCY COOK in Prairie Co AR), URIAH J.(who married LAURAH SHERROD)and THOMAS M. In 1840 Mary moved the children to Prairie County, Caroline Township, (Cabot, Lonoke, Old Austin area) Caroline twp. was also in Lonoke and Pulaski Counties at other times. Elizabeth and Milford Saunders-Sanders moved to MO. Nathan and Nancy were in the 1860 Jefferson Co census but by 1870 she and the three children, Mary E.P, John and Thomas M. were back in Prairie Co near Mary and Thomas. Mary E.P. married a HUDDLESTON and they are buried in Lonoke, AR. Uriah J. and Laurah moved to Sheridan, Grant Co. He was a pioneer Baptist preacher. They later moved to Buck Range in Howard Co where they are buried in Liberty Cemetery. Uriah J. was born in 1832 in Randolph Co and died in 1905 in Howard Co. LAURAH SHERROD NEWELL was the daughter of SALATHIEL SHERROD and was born in Miss. I need to know Mary's maiden name--What happened to Pernece and Mary Ann (Polly) and Thomas M? Thomas M was in the Civil War but I found no war record for Nathan What happened to Nathan and Nathan's children, John and Thomas M? Who are the parents-siblings of THOMAS NEWELL? I suspect he might be related to SAMUEL, WILLIAM, and JOHN C. NEWELL who were mentioned in the Ark. Territorial Papers. One of these man lived fairly close to Caroline Township.

John Sherrod Sr.

Notes for JOHN SHERROD, SR.:
The family name at this point may have been "Sherrer", "Sherrard" or Shearer.

The Sherrod name is believed to have evolved from "Sherrer". It is believed that John Sr. was probably named John Sherrer, Sr. Early Sherrods seem to have been pretty casual about the spellings of their names. Harold Whitlock has a copy of a handwritten will for one of the early Sherrods (John Sherrod Sr., I think), and the family named is spelled differently at two places in the same will.

There is some evidence that John Sherrer Sr. was the son of George Shearer. According to "17th Century Isle of Wight County Virginia" by John Bennett Boddie, George Shearer came to Virginia from England in 1637. His headright was claimed by Thomas Hampton, May 19, 1637 when he secured a patent to 700 acres on the Nansemond River in the upper parish of New Norfolk.

Birth year of John Sherrod Sr. is from his deposition, giving his age as 36 on 14 Dec 1665; Will and Deed Book I, Isle of Wight Co., VA, p. 543
In 1688 John Sherrer with John Wakefield received a land grant of 1050 acres. The grant was further described as "1050 acres on branches of the first SW of the Black Water, adjacent Cook's Lyne and their own land."

The will of John Sherrer, who was born about 1630, was made on January 23, 1705. He deeded to "Elizabeth Sherrer, the widow of John Sherrer, Jr., the plantation which she now lives on to fall to John Sherrer my grandson." Executor: "My son, Alexander." John Sherrer, Sr. died in Isle of Wight County in 1706/7. He and is wife (daughter of Thomas Parnell) had six children: Alexander Shearer, Susannah Shearer, Thomas Shearer, Robert Shearer (died 1727), John Shearer, Jr. (married Elizabeth), Elizabeth Shearer (who married John Dew, son of Colonel Thomas Dew, member and speaker of the House of Burgesses of the Colony of Virginia).

John Sherrer's will dated 23 January 1705 was recorded on 10 March 1706/7 in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, in Book I, page 480.

Birth year of John Sherrod Sr. is from his deposition, giving his age as 36 on 14 Dec 1665; Will and Deed Book I, Isle of Wight Co., VA, p. 543
