Robert Sherrod
Notes for ROBERT SHERROD:
Robert Shearer's will was made October 27, 1727 in Bertie County, Chowan Precinct, North Carolina, and provided "although sick and weak in body...", Further, ... "to sons, Robert and Arthur Shearer - plat of land on the Little Swamp containing 300 acres. Son John Shearer - 100 acres called the Poynt land. To Shearer - (torn) - plantation where I now live which I purchased of John Blackburn. Son William Shearer, plantation where I now live with 200 acres, etc." Subsequent deeds and wills indicate the missing son, was Benjamin who married Patience McKinnie. His will was made on June 5, 1759, and authorized "my brothers William Sherrod and John Sherrod, trustees of my estate." Further "to son, Benjamin Sherrod, land in Northampton which I purchased of William Hurst being 50 acres with all my fishing ground and his choice of my negroes, 1 iron pot, 1bed, etc. When he arrives at age 21." In those days an iron pot was a valuable commodity. Robert's family lived on Kirby Creek in Northampton County for a while before moving on across Roanoke River to Halifax County.
Robert Sherrard's will named Sarah and Prudence as his youngest children; and William as his youngest son and were called minors.
Robert Sherrod and his wife Elizabeth secured land grants in the Meherrin River section of North Carolina and moved there in the early 1700's.

Thank you for replying. While still trying to get this right, I checked an abstract from the will of Robert Sherrod in a book. From what it says Robert married to Lydia died in 1779 & will was proven 12/15/1800, his sons were John, Salathiel, Robert, Wilson, daughters Abba Shivrs, Salra Hyman, Sally Weatherbee, Polly Best (the names are spelled this way in the book,I think some are wrong). This must be Robert 4th. John Lewelling was an Execs. also Bartholomew Weathersbee and Salathels Sherrod (& then it's says wife right after his name in small print, does that mean Salathels wife?).
For Robert 2 b.1654 married to Elizabeth Parnell, children: John 1675, William 1677, Susannah, 1681, (Ben 1683 m. Patience McKinney d. 6/1759 now I feel he does not fit her and would be b. closer to 1725), Arthur 1685 Prudence 1690, Sarah 1694, Robert 3 1674 (all dates are abt.)
(Clearly the dates given above for Robert's children can not apply to this Robert as his will states that Sarah Prudence & William were 'minors' in 1732 which means none could have been born before 1714. On the other hand, it is far more likely that he married about 1673-74 than that he waited until after 1700 when he would have been fairly old. It apears as though these dates do not apply to this family. However, Prudence does not appear on any other Sherrod near this time so how could it be any other family. Clearly some research is needed here.)
For Robert 3 & Lydia I have James 1776, Robert 4 1/19/1788, John 1789, Deliah 1790, Elizabeth 1792. This is clearly inacurate as Robert (b abt 1674( could not have been having children in the late 1700s.
Then for Robert 4 & Lydia Lewellyn I have Robert, Wilson, John Llewellyn, Salathiel, Sabrah, Abbay, Sally, Polly. I got the date of 1/19/1788 from some where, and it may be Wilson Robert Sherrod's b. date. What do you think?
I did not have Robert 5 family, I had John Lewellyn under the 4th, and the dates were not working
The book I have with the will, was trying to show that Benjamin Sherrod who was married to Patience McKinney lived next to Elias Leggitt b. 1704 Bertie Co. Elias's son, William Sr. b. abt 1720 lived in Martin Co.& married a women named Patience and they had grand children with names of Salathel and Sherwood. I now don't think William Jr. married Ben's wife like they thought might be, but maybe she was a daughter of a Salathel Sherrod (not the one that went to MS)or a James because one of their son's was named James S. (don't know what the S is for but it was this son who named children with the above Sherrods names of Salathel, and Sherwood). William Sr. son William Jr. b. abt.1764 was in the war of 1812 from TN he had moved to TN 1801 and Mury Co., TN 1816, then settled in MS before 1819.
The book's comments were that Patience seemed to be near-kin to a Salathiel Sherrod. (I now know who Ben's Patience married and her family) The book also has Benjmain's will naming sons Ben, Richard, John, and his brothers as a William and a John to take over estate if wife remarries. another comment is: Martin Co., was formed in 1774 from Halifax and Tyrrell. Therefore JAMES SHERROD may have lived in Halifax or Tyrell prior to his land being cut into Martin Co., and never moved. In other words, Elias Leggitt, Sr. and Benjamin Sherrod may have been neighbors. Do you know of a james with a son Ben that would fit in this time period?
No where before did I see a JAMES's mentioned other than a child. They are talking like James was the father of Ben or that Ben and James are one?? I need to write them about this.
One other interesting point I found in the book on the page next to the above is there is also a deed book showing WM Leggitt and Johathan Lewelling doing a land sale 7/12/1775 Anson Co., N.C..
Once I get these dates right life will be a lot easier. Thanks for the help. LINDA

Arthur Sherrod
With brother Robert, inherited plat of land on the Little Swamp containing 300 acres:
WILL-LEGATEE: NCWILLS-WL5 p. 83, father ROBERT SHEARER dated 27 Oct 1727; given 300 acres of land at Little Swamp along with brother ARTHUR
Arthur was a lieutenant in the Northampton Militia which was commanded by Colonel John Dawson. John Dawson is probably the brother of Hanna Dawson who married John Sherrod III.
William Sherrod
Notes for WILLIAM SHERROD:Inherited plantation where father lived with 200 acres.
Virginia North Carolina Genealogy Exchange places his birth at aft 1705.
Linda Leggitt Swystun places his birth (and the others shown here) at abt 1677.
According to his father's will, he was born after 1714.
She stayed with sister Susannah after her father's death.
Sarah Sherrod
According to Virginia North Carolina Genealogy Exchange, Sarah was born after 1705
in Isle of Wight.
According to her father's will she was born after 1714.
She stayed with sister Susannah after her father's death.
Benjamin Sherrod
The will of Robert Shearer dated 27 October 1727 in Bertie County, North Carolina, named his sons Robert, Arthur, John, William, and a son whose name had become lost because of deterioration from a fold in the will. The land bequeathed to this son was sold by Benjamin Sherrod on 4 August 1738. Therefore, Benjamin Sherrod was the missing heir. On August 4, 1738, Benjamin Sherrod of Chowan Precinct, Bertie County, North Carolina sold property located on "Meherring River " adjoining that of William Sherrod. This is the earliest record I am presently aware of concerning Benjamin Sherrod. In August 1745, Benjamin Sherrod was in South Carolina; but by September 1749, he was back in Edgecombe County, North Carolina.
In 1754 Benjamin Sherrod and his wife Patience (McKinnie) of Edgecombe County sold several pieces of property mentioned in "will of our father Barnaby McKinnie." Patience McKinnie Sherrod was the daughter of Barnaby McKinnie, Jr. and his wife Mary Brown.
Benjamin Sherrod's will was made on June 5, 1759 and probated in Halifax County, North Carolina June Court 1760, establishes the date of his death as between June 1759 and June 1760. and authorized "my brothers William Sherrod and John Sherrod, trustees of my estate." Further "to son, Benjamin Sherrod, land in Northampton which I purchased of William Hurst being 50 acres with all my fishing ground and his choice of my negroes, 1 iron pot, 1 bed, etc. When he arrives at age 21." In those days an iron pot was a valuable commodity.

I have doubts that this is the correct Benjamin who married Patience McKinnie. If so, he would have been abt 74 years old when he fathered Benjamin. This means that Patience was at least 30 years younger than he. Not impossible, but not likely. This would also imply with considerable probability, that he was previously married. Yet no mention is made in the will of other sons or daughters. This leads me to believe that Patience was his first wife an d he was much younger that 74 when he fathered son Benjamin and hense, this Benjamin is not the one who was the son of Robert (2nd generation). This information is a composite of several sources and until more information is found, I will leave it as is.
Patience McKinnie
The data on Patience KcKinnie being married to Benjamin Sherrod is courtesy of Linda Leggitt Swystun. She also indicates the following:
My William Leggitt Jr's mother was married to Benjamin Sherrod, after Benjamin died she married William Leggitt Sr. In 1801 William Leggitt Jr. moved from Marolboro S.C. to Mury Co., TN with his family. William Jr. was born in Martin Co, N.C.. This must be the connection. I also wondered why they went to TN. Before leaving TN they also lived in Williamson, and Humphery Co., MS (Co. lines changing could mean they did'nt really move). There father William Sr. after his wife Patience death rode a horse from S.C. to TN to be with his 2 sons William Jr and Absolum and died there. William Sr. also had a son James who stayed in Marolboro and named some of his children with the name of Sherrod. Looks like William Sr. didn't only have his children in TN, but also step children there too? By 1820 William Jr. and his brother were in MS where latter they both died. One other thing a 2nd cousen of William Sr. was a LLewellyn Leggitt who moved from N.C. to TN and then moved to MS (he may have been in GA also on his way to TN). He was a minister and died in MS.However. The Virginia & North Carolina Genealogy Exchange indicates that Patience McKinnie was married to JAMES HOLDERNESS. Thus, Patience must have married James first, then Benjamin, then William.
Richard Sherrod
Richard was not mentioned in his father's will. Does that mean he was dead at that time?
Samuel Thomas
Samuel Thomas is married to Elizabeth according to Worth S. Ray. Samuel Thomas witnessed the will of Jonas Sherrod dated 1760.
Additional Documents: VAIOW-WL1 p. 94
ISSUE-SPOUSE: marriage to ELIZABETH SHEARER has not been verified
ISSUE-LINEAGE: said to have a daughter named ALICE that married a BRYAN
WILL-LEGATEE: VAIOW-WL1 p. 94, father JOHN THOMAS dated 31 Dec 1725
LAND-PURCHASE: VAIOW-DE2 p. 8, from father JOHN THOMAS and mother HANNAH, 100 acres adjoining WEST and Cypress Swamp dated 3 Apr 1722, W: JAMES BONN (BENN?) and GEORGE WILLIAMSON
RELOCATION: removed to Northampton County, North Carolina
Elizabeth Sherrod
Samuel Thomas is married to Elizabeth according to Worth S. Ray. Samuel Thomas witnessed the will of Jonas Sherrod dated 1760
According to Virginia North Carolina Genealogy Exchange, Elizabeth married in John Screws III in 1708. Does this mean she married Samuel after John died (because Samuel witness the will of Elizabeth's brother Jonas in 1760) or is there an error and this is not the correct Elizabeth that married John Screws III.
Richard Thomas
DOCUMENTATION: VAIOW-WL1 p. 94
WILL-LEGATEE: VAIOW-WL1 p. 94, father JOHN THOMAS dated 31 Dec 1725; given 100 acres adjoining JOHN CLARK, JOHN SHERRARD, WEST, and PORTIS
Eleanor Sherrod
Notes for Eleanor:The identification of Richard Thomas as the husband of Eleanor Sherrod comes from "Isle of Wight County Marriages, 1628-1800", Compiled and edited by Blanche Adams Chapman, 1933. The entry reads as follows: "Thomas, Richard & Eleanor Sherrer, dau. of John Sherrer. 1736. W. B. 4, P. 192. D. B. 9, P. 379"

Elenor is also mentioned in hr mother's will:
VAIOW-WL1 p. 132: WILL-LEGATEE: VAIOW-WL1 p. 132, mother ELIZABETH (---) SHEARER dated 8 Jan 1736
