Abraham Ricks in the early 1800's migrated to Franklin (now Colbert) County, Alabama. Early Alabama historians mistakenly listed Benjamin Sherrod as the son of Issac Sherrod. Issac was Abraham's father.

MARCIA W. SHERROD
CHAPEL HILL -- Mrs. Marcia Williams Sherrod, 63, passed gracefully away Christmas Eve at her home in Chapel Hill. Surrounded by family and friends, she ended her courageous six-year battle with breast cancer.
Marcia was born in Windsor on April 29, 1940 to Frederick and Augusta Williams. The family relocated to Tarboro which remains the home place. Marcia graduated from Tarboro High School in 1958, received a Bachelor of Arts from North Carolina Women's College in 1962, and completed her Masters of Education at the University of North Carolina in 1965. In 1962, she married Robert Lee Sherrod Jr. and the couple relocated to Nuerenberg, Germany.
In 1969, Marcia returned to Tarboro as an administrator with the Edgecombe County School System, retiring in 1998. As a life-long educator, she endeavored to provide all children in the county with quality education by implementing the HOST and Reading Recovery programs which continue to thrive. A promotion to Director of Federal Programs allowed her to positively influence the lives of many Edgecombe county educators as well as children.
Her paintings of Historic Tarboro, rural scenes, and florals hang in Heritage Hospital, restaurants, businesses, and homes throughout the state and southeastern U.S. She actively participated in the Edgecombe County Cultural Arts Council. She studied under prominent watercolor artist, W. Chamberlain. Throughout her life, Marcia both relished in her painting and cultivated its love in others, including her eldest daughter who has followed her mother as an artist.
Many of her happiest moments came from dancing with friends and family. She participated in musicals while at Women's College. At home, she sang and danced these parts while tending the house. She radiated joy as she danced, affecting all around her. In 2001, she performed a tap dance in "Breast Taking" a production at Man Bites Dog Theater in Durham. When confronted with cancer, Marcia's positive attitude epitomized both courage and spirit, Her grace and elegance inspired all around her. As she often stated, she tap danced her way through chemotherapy as a member of the "Cancerettes."
Best remembered for the numerous lives she touched, she blessed many people with her friendship, which was truly a gift. To Marcia, a friend was a friend for life, as evidenced by the many diverse and lasting friendships she cultivated. Her grace, strength and beauty, which exemplified the North Carolina she cherished, enriched all who knew her. The essence of her spirit is embodied in the daughters she raised and their relationship.
She is survived by her brother, Frederick Alton Williams Jr. of Tarboro, her daughters Sonia Sherrod-Gettes, of Media, Penn, and Marcia Louise Sherrod of Chapel Hill; her grandchildren Jeremy and Sarah Gettes, of Media, Penn., and her niece and nephew Susan Williams Moore and Rick Williams of Tarboro.
The family will receive friends at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frederick A. Williams Jr. in Tarboro anytime. Visitation at Carlisle Funeral Home will be from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 27.
A funeral and graveside service will be held at 2 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 28 at Calvary Episcopal Church in Tarboro.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Cornucopia House Cancer Support Center, Overlook Building, Suite 220, 111 Cloister Court, Chapel Hill, NC 27514 or Calvary Episcopal Church, 406 East Church St., Tarboro, NC 27886.
