Historical OverviewAfter the American Revolution (1776 to 1783)the Treaty of Paris gave Spain control of Florida. The British evacuated, and Spanish colonists and American settlers, including escaped slaves, arrived. These settlers infringed on Seminole Territory and old conflicts, plus the haven for slaves, provoked the US Army into attacking.
